This time I finally shot this Yan Taoyuan version of Dorothy's outfit. The preparation time was indeed quite long, so the moment I saw the raw photos after the shoot, I felt a great sense of achievement. This outfit combines a modified cheongsam design in its setting, so after getting my hands on it, observing the tailoring and details became particularly important. First of all, the overall fabric of this white dress is very sophisticated; the main body uses a material similar to satin, which has a very nice drape. The splicing part on the chest and the cuffs adopt transparent tulle and ruffle designs, paired with that faint embroidery pattern, which visually indeed presents a lightness and sweetness that fits the original setting. The side waist area has large cutouts, coupled with a multi-layered ruffled skirt hem that is short in the front and long in the back. This outfit actually places high demands on body posture and stance; failing to stand properly can easily make one look bloated, but as long as you can maintain a proper sense of elongation, the effect will be incredibly photogenic.
The hairstyle part is a major focus; that iconic double-bun style needs to be fixed with a wig and hairpins. However, the color of this pink wig this time is very accurate—not a vulgar fluorescent pink, but a highly lustrous light pink. The hair ends are slightly curled, which, paired with the pink small flowers and pearl embellishments on the headpieces, forms a high degree of unity with the white and pink color scheme of the dress. Regarding makeup, to emphasize the translucency of Anime cosplay, I chose a base makeup with relatively high brightness, combined with daily Japanese-style large-diameter colored contacts and detailed eyelashes. The eye makeup wasn't made too heavy, but rather emphasized the elongated shape of the eyes. The lip makeup used a natural soft-mist pink, striving overall to display a pure yet exquisite character temperament for a pink-themed girl.
The pairing of props is also one of the souls of this styling. The tuanshan (round fan) held in hand wasn't just some random commodity bought carelessly; the plant textures on the fan surface and the hanging pink and white tassels fit perfectly with the details of the entire dress. Additionally, there is that white parasol with lace trim. The craftsmanship of this umbrella is very nice, with a wide lace edge at the top. After opening, the parasol has moderate light transmittance, making it perfect to use as a foreground or held over the head as a backdrop. On my feet, I paired them with a pair of silver stiletto pointed-toe high heels. Although standing for a long time can be a bit tiring, the silver reflective material indeed makes the leg lines look more slender in front of the lens. Paired with that ring of white lace leg garter around the thigh, the layering of the entire outfit instantly comes out.
During the shoot, we chose a clean, pure pink background and arranged the figure on a white cylindrical high platform. To fully display the layering of the dress, it was necessary to frequently change actions. For example, lifting one leg slightly while keeping the upper body upright, and using one arm to coordinate the action to hold the round fan or support the parasol. During this process, the lace leg garter on the thigh and the short-front, long-back skirt hem would be naturally displayed in the frame. In addition, attention must be paid to controlling breathing, because white clothing can easily experience overexposure under strong light. To preserve the surface textures of the clothes and the shadow details of the neckline lace, we mainly adopted large softboxes for the studio lighting layout, utilizing uniform high-key lighting to maintain a bright and clean atmosphere throughout the entire frame without causing the highlight areas to wash out into pure white.
For this kind of sweet-styled cosplay shoot, color coordination is highly critical. Pure pink walls, a white base, white clothes, and silver shoes—this high-brightness integrated color system can easily look flat if not controlled well. However, if you make good use of props and postures to create visual focal points in the frame, you can build upon a clean and minimalist foundation to bring out the character's own cuteness. Although the preparation timeline for this shoot stretched very long, my emotions and state were relatively good during the formal shooting. Full commitment and sufficient preparation of props and costumes beforehand are required to capture the best side of this Yan Taoyuan Cheongsam outfit.
