For this Rozen Maiden cosplay group shoot, we spent a considerable amount of time during the early planning phase determining the tone of each look. Group photoshoots often need to balance individual character traits with the unity of the overall frame, which is why we chose to complete this set of works in a studio setting. The styling I was responsible for, featuring a bright yellow top paired with orange pumpkin shorts, was adorned with large areas of white lace and ruffles, creating a highly sweet pastoral fairytale atmosphere. The prop used was a rattan basket, adding a touch of daily life vibe. To maintain the smooth lines of the legs in front of the lens, I paid special attention to flattening the white tights at the knees. The black crisscross strap shoes on my feet looked exceptionally sharp on the black mirror-reflective circular disk.
The studio setup utilized red wrinkled fabric covering the floor, combined with randomly scattered white translucent tulle, giving the originally monotonous solid-colored background a rich sense of layers. Coordinated with the giant circular spotlight cast behind by the photographer, the character stood at the center of the halo, with shadows naturally projected onto the wall behind, creating a very distinct three-dimensional effect. The other set of gothic and dark stylings, such as the one wearing black feathered wings, featured highly delicate feather textures on the shoulders; holding a skull prop paired with deep purple color-temperature lighting, it presented a serene and slightly mysterious visual state. The big red dress styling was the most magnificent; the complex headpiece and heavy skirt hem not only tested the costume's tailoring but was also a massive challenge to my personal core control. The action of lifting the skirt required repeated adjustments to let the skirt hemline present a natural fan shape. The shoes were thick-soled black high heels, and standing on the reflector for shooting required stabilizing the center of gravity to prevent disrupting the elegance of the overall styling.
The green long dress set, featuring a long white headscarf, held a uniquely shaped metallic-textured cylinder and a wooden arrow. Coordinated with the green background lighting, it made the character's silhouette appear exceptionally slender. During the shoot, I experimented with multiple low-angle and high-angle perspectives, and the photographer made multiple micro-adjustments to the height of my hands holding the props to perfectly match the visual proportions between the props and the character. Group shoots test coordinating capacity the most. Everyone needed to take turns appearing in different stylings, while ensuring their respective standings would not clip into each other, and the lighting also needed to be readjusted for different colored costumes. As a Cosplay photography practice, we spent a lot of energy on organizing the makeup and wigs, especially the parting of the bangs, which required repeated combing to avoid looking heavy.
After the shoot, I also reflected on how to make the face more three-dimensional under different colored lights and shadows. Facing this circular lighting, if the standing position is too far forward, it easily leads to overexposure of facial highlights; if it is too far back, one will lose the enveloping feel of the light halo. After several attempts, we found that delicate point of balance.
