This time, shooting Wang Guiren took about half a month of preparation from the initial makeup test to the final photos. The most time-consuming part of the costume was the wide-sleeved dark red coat with gold thread embroidery. The metallic-textured accessories on the collar and cuffs were handcrafted overlay patches. To recreate the intricate and somewhat enchanting Fox-race attire from the game, I personally readjusted the drape of the tassels and metal pendants on the accessories. I chose a reddish-brown wig with slightly curled ends, styled into a high ponytail; the flowing movement of the hair strands when walking was a major plus.
On the day of the shoot, we specifically chose a background with ancient architecture and wooden textures, which perfectly matched the character's ancient style cosplay and xianxia undertones. The oil-paper umbrella prop was found on-site at the last minute. While shooting, the setting sun happened to filter through the canopy, casting a very soft rim light on my face, which I absolutely loved. As for the makeup, the eye makeup was blended with a warm wine-red tone, which, paired with the fluffy fox ears, instantly added the spiritual essence of a fox demon style. The photographer was amazing at candidly capturing motion; the moment of looking back while holding the umbrella and the close-up of lowering my head to touch my hair beautifully captured the character's sense of loneliness and clarity during this character photography session.
In fact, the character of Wang Guiren has many untold stories in the game's plot, so I tried my best to suppress those fleeting emotions in my expressions—no smiling, but keeping a spark in my eyes. The shoot lasted about four hours, and I touched up my makeup twice along the way. Because the weather was a bit humid and hot, sweating made the hair near my hairline stick a bit, but luckily it was slightly adjusted in post-processing. The metal accessories created reflection points under the lights. It took some effort to adjust the angles on-site, but this added a few sparkling little details to the frame. Overall, this look really tested the layering of the costume and the fluidity of the poses. I won't claim it's a hundred percent accurate, but I did my best to convey the character's aloof, independent, yet subtly gentle temperament. I hope this set of photos allows everyone to experience the Wang Guiren I see.
