The shooting and post-processing for this Toy Merchant \"Glimmer Within Reach\" Cosplay photoshoot have finally been completed smoothly. Many people's impression of the Toy Merchant might stay on specific traits in the game, but this costume skin feels extraordinarily light and dreamy to me, fitting perfectly with the atmosphere I wanted to present. Choosing to cosplay this set was not only because the yellow, white, and light purple tones struck a chord with me, but also because its lace and star elements gave me immense creative freedom.
Let's talk about the hair and makeup first, with special thanks to my multi-time collaborator makeup artist Xiao Song. The difficulty of this Youthful makeup look lay in enhancing facial dimensions while balancing a \"translucent\" and \"starlit\" feel. The eye makeup used a generous amount of pearlescent shimmery orange and gold as a base, with rhinestones applied near the inner corners, and hand-drawn star patterns along with small pearls dotting below the eyes and outer corners. If the base makeup wasn't clean enough or if color mixing turned muddy, it could easily look heavy, but Xiao Song handled the elongated eyeliner and eyelash layering with great precision, making the whole makeup look featherlight yet three-dimensional, standing out remarkably under camera lights. Photographer Xiao Liuliu's captures were wonderful—he excels at utilizing natural light, so we relied heavily on evening backlighting and side-backlighting. The warm twilight sun hit the blonde hair and lace trimmings, producing a soft rim-lighting effect.
My personal favorite compositions—such as close-ups cradling the glowing star lamp and high-angle lying shots on the grass—placed very high demands on lighting. The bottom-up fill lighting in image 4 can easily create unnatural facial shadows, but because the light from the star lamp prop was soft, and Xiao Song highlighted the center of the face and under-eyes, it turned this lighting technique into an ethereal special atmosphere, making the eyes look more focused and expressive.
Another challenge during this shoot was securing the wig and headpiece. To faithfully recreate the character's features, the thick braided pigtails paired with intricate lace ruffled bonnet, along with yellow and purple bows and pearls on both sides, made the entire headpiece quite heavy. To prevent the headpiece from tilting or deforming during shooting, we spent considerable time adjusting angles. Thanks to the team's patience in repeatedly confirming whether the bonnet center aligned with the hairline and if the braid movement was perfect. For costume details, the puff sleeves and apron straps were tailored closely, yet prone to wrinkling, so an assistant helped smooth out fabric folds after every pose shift to maintain refined visual polish.
I completed the post-processing myself. The raw shots were solid, as the photographer provided a very sturdy light-and-shadow structure. I only needed to balance the warm-and-cool color harmony and slightly enhance the glowing effect of the star lamp in post so it wouldn't look like a lifeless bulb, but rather truly illuminating. Meanwhile, retaining the dark ambient backdrop allowed the light-toned character and glowing props to stand out in high contrast, highlighting depth and layers. Avoiding excessive re-grading to preserve real-shot photography textures is the standard a qualified Cosplay photoshoot should meet. I liked carrying the visual concept of \"like a star\" through to the end, so I refrained from adding distracting special effects, focusing on retaining natural facial expressions.
As for the Toy Merchant character, I might not comment much on gameplay mechanics, but wearing this outfit truly immerses one into that tranquil yet steadfast state within a soft glimmer. The shooting process went smoothly, every step stayed on rhythm, and the final look exceeded expectations. Lastly, from the bottom of my heart, finding makeup artists and photographers who share aesthetic alignment and strong execution is truly the luckiest thing for any cosplayer dedicated to their craft.
