For this Halloween makeup and styling, I opted for a classic dark gothic aesthetic, coordinating garments tailored from black glossy PVC spliced with sheer mesh. The undeniable advantage of this fabric is how photogenic it looks on camera, but its drawback is just as stark—the slightest discrepancy in lighting can easily flatten the image and erase textural depth. As a result, I communicated thoroughly with the photographer beforehand regarding the lighting scheme: leveraging warm amber background bokeh as rim lighting in the outdoor nightscape, complemented by frontal fill-light to brighten the face. This preserved radiant skin texture while coaxing a stunning, glossy sheen out of the reflective outfit.
The makeup design focused heavily on the eyes and lips: deepening the eye contours, slightly winging out the eyeliner, and pairing it with a classic crimson lipstick, ensuring the dimensional structure of my facial features remained crisp even in low-light night conditions. My hair was styled with subtle waves, and the red devil horns headband served as the crowning touch of the entire ensemble; together with the red devil wings prop across my back, it elevated the look's overall completeness. Additionally, I coordinated a pair of black garter stockings with glossy long gloves, which, when finished with high heels, dramatically elongated the silhouette's proportions.
Staging the scene on the day of the shoot took plenty of dedicated effort: we brought along jack-o'-lanterns and wrought-iron birdcages, pairing them with an on-site smoke machine to conjure the atmosphere of a dark fairytale. To inject kinetic energy into the frames, I whipped my hair dynamically during poses—an exhausting physical workout in practice, yet the captured snapshots held incredible visual impact. To enhance prop storytelling, I struck poses holding a long black whip, or lifted a jack-o'-lantern to partially veil my face, lending rich narrative depth to the imagery. Throughout the session, I explored diverse angles: sitting on stone steps with elevated legs to showcase the sleek lines of the heels and stockings, or glancing back over my shoulder to highlight the wings prop.
Some have asked whether this look channels a touch of Cyndi Wang's Halloween little devil persona; I do think there's a resemblance in how it bridges sweetness with rebellion. The shadowy edge of gothic style colliding with playful Halloween motifs creates an intriguing balance—carrying an aura of detachment without ever feeling overly rigid or solemn. Every time I create themed styling like this—from selecting garments and curating props to discussing composition with the photographer—the entire journey feels like crafting an intimate piece of art. Regardless of genre, translating the imagery in one's imagination into reality through the lens is an immensely gratifying achievement. Although the outdoor shoot wrapped up late into the night, seeing the play of light, shadow, and intricate details in the final photos made every second completely worthwhile.
