[Vivian cosplay] Mysterious Elegance in Zenless Zone Zero: Light and Shadow Captured Under a Purple Umbrella

Shooting this set for Vivian cosplay was a deeply enjoyable process. It wasn't purely about pursuing a 1:1 recreation, but rather bringing out that cool, aloof atmosphere laced with fantasy charm. The character's light purple hair color is highly recognizable; the white highlights on the crown and the gradient transition to white tips at the ends required considerable time to style. This was especially crucial since hair strands can easily show color shifts under outdoor light, requiring post-processing care to avoid uneven lighting that might make the hair tone look dull or greyish. For contact lenses, I chose a dark red style. To match her unique expression, I elongated the eye makeup at the outer corners and slightly deepened the aegyo sal and lower eyelid line, making her gaze feel much more penetrating during close-up portrait shots.

The outfit has rich layering. The upper body features a white lantern-sleeve shirt with subtle fabric texture and a lower-cut neckline, paired with a black choker and a bow tie accessory fitted with a purple square module that outlines the upper body silhouette. The lower half consists of a reflective glossy black leather skirt, layered over a greyish-purple inner petticoat and dark stockings. This combination of materials shines brilliantly under natural outdoor lighting, where sunlight hitting the patent leather creates vivid highlights that add dimension to the frame. For the Elf ears, I picked a comfortable pair so long outdoor shoots wouldn't hurt my ears, and I used extra contouring makeup to deepen the shading inside the ear rim.

The prop umbrella serves as the visual center for this set. Featuring a black and purple canopy printed with minimalist silhouette patterns, opening it creates a natural frame within the composition. During the shoot, we utilized the blocking and light translucency of the umbrella canopy to generate striking contrasts between light and shadow. The first close-up shot perfectly highlights makeup and prop details, while the second medium shot aims to present the character's upright, aloof silhouette, where the combination of stockings and patent leather skirt delivers exceptional texture in ambient outdoor light.

The wooden fence and green tree backdrop at the outdoor location matched the character's natural yet mysterious aesthetic seamlessly. Shooting at such an outdoor location places high demands on glare control and shading; slightly tweaking the umbrella's tilt alters light cast on the face. Light-colored wigs in particular are prone to overexposure, requiring strict highlight control in post-processing while preserving shadow depth so the overall frame doesn't look flat. In terms of posture, medium shots required engaging my arms and waist simultaneously to keep the umbrella handle steady and body upright, ensuring a clean silhouette.

Having done cosplay for a while now, preparing for each character feels like a multi-dimensional aesthetic experiment. From picking the right wig hair color to trimming outfit accessories and mastering composition and lighting on location, every step demands dedication. Though the shooting process was demanding—holding standing poses and carrying an umbrella for long periods—seeing those authentic lights, shadows, and crisp details in the final photos makes all the prep work feel totally worth it.

Beyond reproducing character elements, expressing the character's signature temperament in front of the lens tests one's camera presence. There's no need for overly deliberate poses; simply looking at the camera naturally while allowing the gentle breeze to sway your hair and skirt creates dynamic, vibrant moments. Every shutter click freezes that exact state in time, which is why outdoor shoots appeal to me far more than studio sessions—you capture countless unexpected, lively moments.
