The outdoor shoot for this Suzuran Clearing after snow skin from Arknights is finished, and the photos have been sorted out.
This shoot was specially set in a forest where cherry blossoms were in full bloom. Combining props like Japanese lanterns, an oil-paper umbrella, and a small plush fox, we attempted to recreate the gentle and agile character traits of the character.
During the costume preparation stage, the biggest difficulty was actually not the outfit itself, but fixing and styling the fox ears and nine tails. The trimming and hair flow treatment of the light blonde wig needed to be soft, paired with the headband and hair ornaments to unify the overall temperament. The pink and white parallel-collar attire has a strong sense of layering, with the blue patterns on the cuffs and the red tassels at the waist serving as the visual focal points. Additionally, the red oil-paper umbrella is highly eye-catching among the props, serving to block the sun while balancing the colors in the composition.
The weather on the shooting day was great, and the cherry blossoms were in full bloom. The red lanterns on-site provided excellent Japanese elements. Although transporting these props for the outdoor shoot was quite hard, the final results were totally worth it. The photographer captured several of my different states, including sitting and holding the little fox, strolling while holding the umbrella, and reaching out to touch a flower branch under the cherry blossoms.
For Cosplay photography, early preparation and on-site performance are equally important. Preparing enough props, such as plush toys, lanterns, and oil-paper umbrellas, can greatly enrich the elements in the frame. The alignment between the gaze and movements is also key. Since the character Suzuran inherently possesses traits of healing and protection, the expressions should not be too forced; being naturally relaxed with a slight smile makes it easier to fit the character.
During post-processing color grading, I specifically preserved the translucency of the cherry blossom pink, keeping the frame from looking too saturated. The background was slightly blurred to make the main character and the fox tails stand out more. The highlights were brightened a bit to weaken the dimness of the shadows, making the overall image look cleaner and brighter. For Cosplay photography, bright and cheerful tones can often better convey a character's temperament.
Outdoor shooting indeed takes a lot of physical energy. The costume's center of gravity becomes a bit unstable due to the tails and weight, so I had to pay close attention to my balance when walking around. However, standing on the stone steps in this outfit, surrounded by flowers and green leaves, made the sense of immersion incredibly strong.
We shot about four or five different sets of compositions and stylings in total, and finally selected these few satisfying ones. As my first attempt at a character with an ethereal aura, this preparation work accumulated a lot of experience, giving my future creations more direction.
