[Mumei cosplay] Kabaneri of the Iron Fortress — A Japanese-style Girl in the Autumn Forest

This time, I bring you a Mumei cosplay work from Kabaneri of the Iron Fortress. I chose this water cypress forest as the shooting location, as the warm orange autumn background matches the character's costume colors incredibly well. Regarding character accuracy, the twin-tails hairstyle combined with the yellow hair ribbon creates the iconic fluffy look from the original series. The purple choker echoes the orange-pink Japanese-style coat, and together with the white cherry blossom prints on the sleeves, the overall Japanese style is exceptionally suited for a late autumn outdoor shoot.

The lighting and depth of field were carefully considered during the shoot; for instance, the backlighting by the water or the diffused light between the trees gave the skin texture a very translucent look. This costume has great layers, and the yellow lining of the belt and hem adds visual richness. However, walking around the forest in flip-flops required maintaining my balance, which turned out to be a fun experience. In terms of props and accessories, there were no overly complex setups, so the focus was primarily on body language and eye expressions. Poses like leaning against a tree trunk or crouching on fallen leaves were all meant to bring out that effortlessly composed yet slightly playful aura of the character.

Let me share the location-scouting concept for the day: this set of photos preserves a strong sense of nature, and you could hear the rustling sound when stepping on the fallen leaves covering the ground. A zoom lens was used during the shoot to capture close-ups and full-body shots; the costume's tailoring and color palette present different feelings under various perspectives. The shoot took place during a bright afternoon, and the sunlight filtering through the gaps in the trees hit the fabric, casting a softer warm tone onto the originally pinkish-orange cloth, making me look more energetic. Although there were some dead branches and debris on site, a little post-processing correction was enough to make the image look very clean. As for Mumei's expression, I deliberately avoided being solely cold and instead added a touch of relaxed emotion, which provides a more multi-dimensional display compared to her combat look in the original work. Outdoor photography relies heavily on environmental cooperation, and fortunately, the light that day was very stable until the sun went down, resulting in a high success rate for these final photos in my journey of Portrait photography.
