This set of Matoi-style on-site photos of Marisa Kirisame completed at the convention venue is finally sorted out, so here is a batch while it's fresh.
Regarding the character Marisa Kirisame in Touhou Project, I believe the first thing that pops into everyone's mind must be the classic combination of the black-and-white witch hat, red apron, and broom. However, at the Chengdu Worldline Animation and Comic Exhibition this time, I chose to present a set of fanon styling derived from the D2 worldline setting. Under this variant setting, Marisa sheds some of her conventional simplicity and integrates more gorgeous Gothic and adventure elements. Therefore, before deciding to do this cosplay, I put a lot of thought into the details of the costume and adjusted them extensively.
It took nearly two months from the design sketch to the physical item for this outfit. The most energy-consuming part was the exaggerated black lace high standing collar and the layers of white ruffles on the upper body. The white lace of the collar needed to maintain good crispness to shape a sufficient sense of stage presence under that huge umbrella-like headpiece. Therefore, in terms of material selection, stiff net tulle with good shaping effects was specifically chosen to match with hand-pressed pleats. The black fabric of the upper body is dotted with golden pentagram patterns; this design actually fits Marisa Kirisame's magician temperament of being casual but having her own unique pursuits. In addition, brown leather straps with metal buckles were added to the chest and shoulders. This design, which carries a slight techwear/functional style, adds a sense of capability and tension unique to adventurers to the overall styling.
Regarding the makeup and wig, the long golden hair features big wave curls, and I specifically trimmed the bangs to make them slightly cover the eyes. This way, under the high-angle camera perspective, it can further highlight the character's sense of mystery and thoughtful agility. Earthy gold-brown eyeshadow was selected for large-area blending in the eye makeup, paired with tawny contact lenses of the same color scheme, so that the gaze can maintain a translucent and sharp sense of focus no matter how bright the light at the convention venue is. The overall makeup didn't use overly heavy colors, preserving the natural luster of real skin as much as possible, which allows the gorgeous attire and makeup to achieve a good balance.
On the day of the shoot, the foot traffic at the Chengdu Worldline Animation and Comic Exhibition was very heavy, and the lighting on-site was also quite mixed. It was necessary not only to find angles that were not easily surrounded by crowds but also to pay attention at all times to avoid direct hits from the colorful overhead lights to prevent the golden wig from looking overly reflective or even distorted. The cane held in hand was also specially custom-made; the wooden base color paired with a spirally wound golden ribbon formed a great visual extension in the frame. When posing, I deliberately chose a posture of leaning against the cane and lightly touching my chin with one hand. The slightly tilted head and relaxed finger movements naturally conveyed the character's lazy yet somewhat mischievous personality through body language.
Many people might think that a cosplay costume with such a large number of ruffles and complex pleats will definitely look very bloated when worn. But in fact, as long as you grasp the tightness of the waist belt and the density relationship of the layered skirt hem, it will instead highlight a very obvious waistline and overall slenderness in the frame. The black-and-white tone contrast of the upper body is extremely strong, working with the embellishment of the dark brown buckle straps to give this look a powerful visual impact in light-dark contrast, maintaining a relatively high recognition even in the colorful environment of a convention.
Of course, cosplay itself is something that heavily tests detail restoration and personal expressiveness, especially under the premise of a Touhou fanon setting where we have no official original illustrations as a rigid control standard. Therefore, I had to put more effort into the texture of the costume, the cleanliness of the makeup, and the completeness of the props, striving to present myself in front of the camera not just as someone wearing a gorgeous outfit, but truly reifying that unique magician image under the D2 worldline. As an amateur who loves studying character styling, being able to wear this outfit to a large-scale exhibition like the Chengdu Worldline Animation and Comic Exhibition to shoot a set of photos was tiring but filled with a sense of achievement and fun under cosplay photography.
