This time, I am presenting Saigyouji Yuyuko from Touhou Project. To restore the unique temperament of this ghost princess, I made specific plans regarding both the costume materials and the set design. The main body of the entire costume is a pure white layered long dress, utilizing a large amount of lace trim and tulle fabric. The headpiece uses lightweight materials similar to feathers and white cloth to simulate the opulence of her lifetime, and the pink gradient wig was intentionally given slight curls and volume, hoping to capture her unique personality that seems lazy yet carries a sense of detachment. The small ornaments on the hairstyle and the choker on the neck were all brought to life based on the character's original designs.
For the studio photography setup, I chose the space provided by the Light and Shadow Universe Photography Studio. The highest suspended light purple-gray translucent fabric is the core of the entire image. These fabrics were hung at various angles, creating scattered layers of varying heights, looking like both massive blooming petals and profound, mysterious clouds. For the lighting, a soft, diffuse light source was chosen so that after the light penetrates these fabrics, it forms a misty texture on the character's surface to match the melancholic undertone of her story.
In terms of props, skeletons and skulls were important elements of this shoot. I intentionally placed the skeleton model and skull below the character's line of sight, creating an interaction with the tray in her hands. Miniature fruit ornaments and a small red bottle were placed in the tray; amidst the overall cool palette of gray, white, and blue, this touch of red provides a visual contrast and echoes a certain symbolic detail in the character's lore.
During the shooting process, I tried multiple poses to find the best visual balance. In the end, I still chose the current sitting posture, with my gaze cast slightly downward, which, combined with the hem of the dress scattered across my knees, concentrates the core focus of the entire image on the character. The white lace and translucent tulle create rich visual layers in the frame, and the cool-toned ambient light gives the overall quality a more premium feel.
The core pursuit of this shoot lies in "phantom elegance," just like the ink-stained cherry blossoms mentioned in the description. This kind of elegance is not bright and lively, but rather carries a hint of tranquility and stillness. Therefore, when managing my expressions, I refrained from making overly exaggerated facial movements, instead keeping my facial expression as relaxed and slightly cold as possible, allowing the audience's gaze to naturally follow the lines of the attire and the guidance of the scene, landing upon her lonely yet serene gaze.
Making the costume and arranging the props took a lot of effort, especially to create an extraordinary, ethereal feeling within a studio environment, requiring repeated adjustments to the stands and backdrops on-site. The final photos retain a wealth of environmental atmosphere. The blurring of hair strands and the edges of the tulle, along with the juxtaposition of reality and illusion between the foreground skull and the red bottle, make the entire frame look more like a frozen moment from a stage play.
The above is a little personal sharing about this Saigyouji Yuyuko shoot. Trying to get closer to the character itself through light, shadow, and scenery is precisely where the fun of cosplay lies.
