[Sage cosplay] VALORANT Cherry blossom night photography: Custom qipao design Shoot Log

Preparing this Custom qipao design for Sage cosplay took about two weeks from conceiving the theme to the actual shoot. The costume featured a pink-hued modified qipao fabric, and the beading and sequins along the borders produced exceptional texture under night flash. Since the custom look leaned toward an everyday ancient style, the makeup deliberately eschewed the heavy, dark colors of the original design; the eyeshadow matched the pink palette of the dress, while the black hair and rear bun adhered strictly to Sage's signature hairstyle to preserve the character's core recognizability.

The shooting location was a cherry blossom grove, matching the poetic mood of fading blossoms as spring draws to a close. However, Cherry blossom night photography poses a true test for lighting, so we brought two continuous lights this time. The key light came down from slightly above the front to sculpt facial contours, especially accentuating the slender line of the eyes; the other light was placed to the side to illuminate the cherry branches in the background, creating natural, soft bokeh on camera.

During the first half, I used a customized butterfly round fan whose lace trim and pink floral clusters complemented the dress. To keep the gestures effortless, I held the fan slightly higher to diffuse part of the light, lending a more relaxed, languid gaze. In the second half, I switched to the oil-paper umbrella adorned with wisteria garlands, which played a crucial role in the composition—partially obscuring half the face or tilting slightly so the hanging flowers cascaded down, using fluid lines to visually elongate body proportions.

Throughout the Cosplay photography session, controlling the range of motion and keeping a relaxed facial expression was essential. Wearing a floor-sweeping gown restricted foot mobility, so I deliberately chose subtle gestures like tilting my head slightly or lifting the hem. Midway through, the face shadows were too harsh because the light was placed too high; after promptly adjusting the angle, the illumination softened considerably. We captured extra takes reaching toward the blossoms, nicely blending foreground motion with background depth. In post-processing, priority was given to preserving the original lighting depth rather than over-smoothing the skin, retaining authentic skin textures to maintain the night-shoot atmosphere.

Reviewing the finished shots, both the lighting capture and the costume details were spot-on. Thanks to the floral garlands, the foreground was delightfully rich, giving this custom design a quiet, tender quality. All in all, it was a very rewarding creative endeavor.
