[Azuki Azusa cosplay] Becoming the Stony Cat: Recreating a Classic on Guangzhou Streets in 2024

Quite some time has passed since the broadcast of works related to The Hentai Prince and the Stony Cat, but time has not faded the color of this character. I decided to present this classic look of Azuki Azusa cosplay once again during the 2024 Guangzhou Anime Convention.

A white collared top paired with a bright yellow ribbon bow, a pink-and-black plaid pleated skirt, plus the iconic gray short hair, animal ears, and fluffy tail—it instantly pulls people back into that story's atmosphere of youthful banter and emotional tug-of-war. For the wig, I selected voluminous light silver-gray short hair with curtain bangs on both sides and the iconic pink barrette hair clip, striving to recreate the fluffiness of the original character design in its texture. As for the animal ears that serve as the character's soul, I specially picked a pair of gray plush ears with internal structural support, requiring angle adjustments when worn to make the ear tips look natural and flexible rather than rigid.

The white shirt is custom-made, retaining a Peter Pan collar design edged with pale green piping, soft and skin-friendly. The yellow ribbon bow on the chest acts as the visual anchor of the upper body; when tying the knot, I intentionally left slightly longer tails to add a graceful drape. The small wrist slits on the cuffs along with two small silver buttons truly tested the tailor's craftsmanship. The pleat count on the plaid skirt was just right, flaring out naturally when squatting, with neat stitching at all seams. Overall, this styling pays great attention to fine details.

For makeup, I opted for a matte liquid foundation to handle the outdoor lighting and slightly warm weather, maintaining oil control for a fresh, long-lasting look throughout the day without fading. To match the character's eye color, I wore clear blue contact lenses and used pale eyeshadow to subtly shade the eye sockets. The focus was placed on the eyeliner—using a liquid eyeliner pen to slightly elongate the outer corners, paired with well-defined lashes to visually enlarge the eyes while enhancing the focus and clarity of the gaze.

This photoshoot coincided with the 2024 Guangzhou Anime Convention. Instead of confining the shoot entirely indoors, I chose the public areas near the venue's perimeter. Using the white horizontal louver grilles beside the street as the primary background, these minimalist geometric lines perfectly balanced the intricate plaid and bows on the outfit, making the frame appear organized yet richly layered. There was plenty of foot traffic outside the convention, and the blurred, bustling crowd passing in the background actually added an authentic touch of everyday life to these convention photos. This is precisely the convention photoshoot style I have always loved—seamlessly integrating 2D anime characters into real-world 3D environments so that being on camera never feels isolated. Guangzhou's streets are lush with greenery, and the green trees in the background blurred into soft patches of color under the shallow depth of field, providing a wonderful warm-cool contrast against the cool-toned gray hair and white top.

Regarding the character of Azuki Azusa, many might focus on certain personality quirks. When shaping this set of photos, I didn't deliberately pile on exaggerated expressions, but instead aimed to present a slightly reserved, aloof state. The standing and squatting postures in the photos have modest ranges of motion; for instance, in the cover squatting pose, resting half-clenched fists naturally in front of me with a calm gaze directed into the camera captured that tsundere, slightly awkward yet endearing girlish temperament. The garment details and the character's demeanor form a delicate interplay—once slipping into the Black tights outfit and costume, one naturally immerses into that emotion.

Since this shoot took place primarily under natural outdoor daylight, lighting was abundant. This gave the photos an overall crisp, bright, and translucent quality. Sunlight hitting the white shirt and pink plaid skirt allowed color gradations to transition effortlessly. In portrait photography, mastering light is crucial; while convention grounds can be crowded and chaotic, leveraging natural light often makes it easier to capture a relaxed state than setting up artificial studio lights. The rhythm between model and photographer was very comfortable: finding quiet corners around the bustling convention perimeter, leaning against walls, squatting, adjusting collars—shooting throughout most of the afternoon.

Looking back at this series, continuing to cosplay a character from a decade-old classic in 2024 feels like a tribute to both my original passion and the source work itself. Anime cosplay is not merely about replicating clothes and wigs; it is a visual recreation of those cherished memories of watching anime. When clipping that fluffy tail to my waist and turning to face the camera, that timeless sense of character immersion is truly difficult to sum up in simple words.
