[Rubuska Cosplay] Reverse: 1999: The Carnivore Rubuska Grand Entrance

Rubuska, the carnivore, makes a grand entrance! The convention photos from the Changsha Reverse: 1999 ONLY event are finally edited, so while the excitement is still fresh, I'm organizing and sharing this cosplay photo set. Taking advantage of this release, it serves as a wonderful closing note to this offline Changsha trip.

Preparing this costume actually took quite a lot of effort in terms of details. The outer red coat is the visual centerpiece of the whole ensemble, especially the white fluffy trim around the collar and cuffs. To find fur material with rich texture without looking overly bulky, I browsed through many stores. Luckily, the final product met expectations. Under intense light, the plush fluff puffed out with a natural thickness, yielding a very satisfying level of fidelity.

Next are the signature gloves. Black leather fingerless gloves accented with teal-blue patches perfectly fit Rubuska's vibe. In the first photo, I blocked my vision with my palm, perfectly revealing the blue patch on the glove; those color spots served as a strong accent against the red-and-white color scheme, instantly making the visual energy pop. In the second photo, I spread both hands open; that dynamic tension combined with light and shadows amplified the character's casual and playful nature to the max. After completing these shots, both photographer WiFi and I looked at the screen and felt we had finally nailed that exact feeling.

I must praise photographer WiFi's ingenuity for this set. He used strong lighting with a high contrast ratio. The intense overhead light cast crisp, sharp shadows on the floor tiles. Hard light like this is actually difficult to control; if outfit details aren't sturdy, they can easily look cheap. But under this lighting, Rubuska's outfit had its silhouette sliced with crisp clarity. Especially in the third full-body photo sitting on the ground, slanting sunlight outlined the plush fur at my shoulders and cuffs, making me look as if coated in a golden border. This high-contrast lighting style matched the character's hardcore aesthetic perfectly while displaying the coat's red, white, black, and teal colors seamlessly. My silver wig also revealed clear strand textures under this highlight, giving the subtle curls at the hair ends a natural and layered appearance.

In terms of posing and expressions, I didn't go for overly rigid or standard standing poses this time, but wanted to highlight the character's relaxed, casual, and slightly weird sense of humor. For instance, putting a hand in front of my eyes and framing the lens with both hands in the second photo were little touches developed straight out of the character's personality. The sitting poses were the same—bending one leg slightly while holding props made the overall state look relaxed with a unique rhythm. After all, for a character with such a unique lore setting, conveying the atmosphere from the original context feels much more authentic than stiff recreation.

Let's talk about the Changsha Reverse: 1999 ONLY convention that day. I was very excited before going, as the high-density anime atmosphere when offline fans gather is truly contagious. On site, various characters crossed paths in the space; everyone recognized each other, took photos, and chatted. The joy of connecting over a shared passion is hard to summarize in a single sentence. Attending a convention itself is exhausting—carrying heavy bags and wearing thick clothes—but after a full day, that sense of participation makes you forget physical strain. Rubuska holds a very special place in my heart, and bringing him to the Changsha anime convention and having it recorded by WiFi was a fantastic experience.

From early fabric selection and pattern fitting to waking up early for makeup and wig styling, posing during the shoot, and finally editing in front of the computer, every step slowly pieced together these final photos. Looking at the finished set, all the hard work felt completely worth it. This post is not just a photoshoot log, but also a special keepsake of my Changsha trip and the Reverse: 1999 ONLY event.
