A summer pool party—this theme sounds filled with cool, refreshing moisture, but during the actual shoot, the September sunshine was still hot enough to feel like being roasted over coals. Braving such high temperatures for an outdoor shoot is a test for any cosplayer, but since it's a Swimsuit cosplay theme, naturally I had to push through; after all, that bright, sunny atmosphere was exactly what we needed.
For this shoot, I chose Takanashi Hoshino from Blue Archive. Starting with styling prep, trimming this pink wig really tested my cutting skills—the curves of the bangs and sidelocks needed to flatter my face shape while retaining an airy, fluffy sense of languid ease. The iconic ring-shaped headpiece atop the head also required meticulous anchoring to prevent it from shifting during outdoor shooting, especially since the hot weather easily makes hair frizzy. Fortunately, the finished hair and makeup looked very clean and refreshing, with the pink hair popping brilliantly against the deep blue sky.
Speaking of makeup, to suit the bright outdoor lighting, I intentionally chose a waterproof and sweatproof matte foundation base. Even in the heat, the base makeup couldn't melt. The focal point was the eye makeup: wearing striking bright blue contact lenses paired with fine upper and lower eyeliner and curled lashes gave my gaze a refreshed clarity infused with the character's signature sleepiness and playful charm. For blush, I blended peach and orange tones, placed slightly higher on the cheeks to create that cute sun-kissed flush. Topped with a hydrating water-red lip gloss, the entire face looked fresh, lively, and incredibly photogenic before the camera.
In terms of clothing, I paired a pure white backless camisole with thin shoulder straps—a minimalist style fitting the summer pool party theme that felt effortlessly comfortable. While not an overly revealing bikini, this casual white camisole added a cozy sense of loungewear and vacation relaxation. The delicate straps neatly outlined the shoulder and collarbone lines for a very crisp visual effect. Paired with the white round-frame blue-tinted sunglasses on my head, the blue-white-pink color combination visually cooled the scene down by a few degrees.
The shooting location was by an outdoor poolside with a stone wall. The low wall built of light-toned stone masonry served as a backdrop with a fantastic resort hotel vibe, blending seamlessly with the blue sky and white clouds. As natural light poured down, the lenses of the sunglasses on my head clearly reflected the blue sky and architectural silhouettes—a light-and-shadow texture that studio shoots simply cannot replicate. Leaning back halfway on an off-white lounge chair allowed my body to relax, moving away from forced posing to naturally rest my chin on my hand or blink, capturing candid moments.
In front of the camera, there's no need for overly contrived poses; simply immersing oneself in the character's languid demeanor brings out a unique summer charm. Whether resting my chin in one hand looking at the lens or offering a playful single-eye wink, the entire set radiated effortless ease. Although the sun was glaring and I was drenched in sweat by the end, reviewing the photos made me feel that the pure combination of sunlight, blue sky, pink wig, and white camisole—along with the vacation atmosphere—made this "roasted" adventure completely worthwhile. That is perhaps the ultimate charm of Cosplay: bringing an anime character into real life through styling and setting, leaving behind a refreshing and vivid memory in this scorching September Summer photography Outdoor portrait.
