For this Sakura and Syaoran cosplay photoshoot, we chose a vintage, warm-lit cafe as the backdrop. The wooden tables, chairs, and wall tiles here perfectly fit the daily school atmosphere in Cardcaptor Sakura. Especially the hanging bare light bulbs and the clay pots on the shelves add a natural sense of warmth to the entire frame.
For this duo cosplay, we made many trade-offs regarding the clothing details. The white shirt with a sailor suit collar and the red tie are classic school elements, while the white cloth hat and red hair accessories precisely correspond to Sakura's exclusive look. For the wigs, we specifically picked styles with high gloss and hair color accuracy; the lightness of the short hair and the fluffiness of the twin tails underwent multiple trimmings and stylings. Looking at the costume and hairstyle alone is enough to instantly immerse anyone into the worldview of Cardcaptor Sakura.
On the day of the shoot, we mainly focused on natural snapshots. Frames like making peace signs, resting chins on hands, and touching fingertips were all natural states that emerged during our interaction without intentional posing, which instead highlights that childhood-friend familiarity between the two. The chemistry between partners automatically amplifies in front of the lens; for example, the coordinated glances and pauses in movement make the whole photo set more vivid.
During post-processing retouching, I didn't alter the original tones too much but preserved that warm amber color in the cafe's lighting, making the characters' skin tones look soft and not pale. Once the final photos came out, we felt that this sailor suit look is casual yet highly recognizable; a duo cosplay is all about maintaining this comfortable pacing.
Many people might think cosplay is as simple as putting on clothes and taking pictures, but actually, before every outdoor shoot, we scout the location in advance, adjust the lighting angles, and even prepare some small props to enrich the frame. The plush toy appearing on the table is our secret weapon to break up the stiffness of a static image. While many consider cosplaying to be just dressing up, I feel it's a process of connecting oneself with the character—showcasing that subtle trust in the relationship through the clothing and demeanor.
What satisfies me most in this entire photo set is the capture of the gaze. Whether it's the confidence when looking directly into the lens or the gentleness when looking down at things, the state of mutual understanding between Sakura and Syaoran without too many lines was restored quite well. This also fits the sweet chemistry mentioned in the opening description, because interaction details are very hard to fake.
Although shooting all day was indeed exhausting, seeing the final photos makes me feel all the hard work was worth it. This is perhaps the greatest joy that cosplay sharing brings me—passing on casual yet beautiful emotions to fellow fans through visual presentation. If there's an opportunity in the future, I'd also love to try more different looks from Cardcaptor Sakura, but this school-style, daily-oriented work holds a very special place of memory in my heart.
