This set of photos was taken in the outdoor corridor area of the Shenzhen AD04 convention. The lighting at the venue was on the cool white side, which, combined with the massive metal mesh canopy overhead, hit just the right clean highlights on my predominantly black outfit. This diffused light made the contrast between the patent leather material and the translucent mesh fabric even more pronounced.
The character I cosplayed this time is Hindenburg from Azur Lane, or rather, this succubus-style outfit based on her character setting. The overall outfit is primarily black, utilizing a large amount of glossy patent leather to construct the framework. This pair of over-the-knee boots, in particular, reflects soft highlights when facing the natural outdoor light, visually elongating my leg lines. Together with the metal buckles on the skirt hem and the cutout straps around the abdomen, it perfectly expresses the character's bold and slightly dangerous, sexy aura. The upper body incorporates a bow tie and ruffled elements, along with heart-shaped metal decorations, adding a touch of girlish charm into the rugged patent leather.
The accessories and props are also the visual focus of this look. The black-and-pink dual-toned wings behind me and the slender, heart-shaped tail—combined with the red hair, pointed ears, and black horns—stacked the elements of the "succubus" theme to just the right extent. The tail, in particular, required a custom lightweight internal support structure to maintain a natural drape and the correct orientation of the heart-shaped tip under windy outdoor conditions. This allowed the tail's dynamic movement to fall naturally whether I was standing or half-kneeling. The black horns and pointed ears on my head were blended smoothly with my skin tone, offering a natural transition around the edges so they didn't look too jarring on-site.
I chose two different shooting angles for these photos: standing and kneeling. In the set of standing photos you see, I tried resting one hand on my horn with my center of gravity shifted slightly to the left, while the other hand extended naturally outward. This not only showcased the complete outfit proportions from the collar to the waist and then down to the patent leather boots, but also allowed the silhouettes of the wings and tail to sketch a beautiful extension within the frame. The kneeling photos in the latter half concentrated the visual focus more heavily on the upper body; with both hands gently pulling the edges of the wings and eyes staring straight into the lens, the subtle expressions of the facial makeup could be captured more clearly. During post-processing, we retained a more authentic skin texture and avoided over-elongating the legs or exaggerating facial features, striving to keep the visual experience of the entire frame closer to the direct intuition of the convention floor.
The audience on the day of AD04 was incredibly enthusiastic. This red-and-black color-schemed outfit had very high recognition on-site, drawing many passersby and photographers to stop and shoot. Honestly, when cosplaying characters with tactical techwear elements and demon settings at a convention, the biggest challenge is having too many props and very heavy boots; walking around outside the exhibition hall is actually quite exhausting. However, as long as the final photo's light, shadow, and postures turn out perfectly, paired with good weather, all this physical labor becomes worthwhile. Midway through the shoot, a gust of wind happened to blow past from the side, instantly freezing the dynamic motion of the red hair strands and the tail, giving the originally static photos a bit of breathing room.
Regarding the presentation of a succubus setting, I personally believe it doesn't necessarily have to completely exaggerate that seductive and enchanting vibe. Under this clothing and styling framework, maintaining a slightly cool, aloof demeanor can instead generate greater character tension, giving the pictures a stronger sense of storytelling. This set of photos records my genuine state at the exhibition venue back then. Compared to the controllable lighting and clean backgrounds of studio shoots, cosplay convention photos under outdoor natural light preserve more of the authentic ambient light, shadow, and atmosphere. This is precisely why, every time I attend a convention, I gladly choose to step outside the exhibition hall and use this style to record a character's image through Succubus cosplay and anime-style photography.
