[Rem Cosplay] Re:ZERO -Starting Life in Another World-: A Cheongsam Interpretation of Red Plum and Chinese Courtyard

The decision to shoot this red improved cheongsam was very decisive. The red main keynote paired with gold prints not only echoes the festive atmosphere of the New Year but also doesn't lose the character's inherent playfulness. In terms of costume choice, I specially selected this halter-neck style with a high-slit design. The upper body pattern retains the traditional slim fit of a cheongsam, while the combination of the side high slit and black safety shorts gave me more freedom when posing within the limited studio space. To emphasize the visual effect of the lower body, the red-and-gold leg ring on the right leg and the black high heels with ankle straps were coordinated long in advance. These detailed embellishments make the visual layers of the entire outfit highly substantial.

The shooting set design has an excellent texture of a Chinese courtyard mansion. The surrounding dark raw-wood lattice windows, the hanging woven bamboo curtains, the arched screen adorned with red plum blossoms in the background, and the white crane sculpture in the corner of the frame together form a very narrative picture, completely different from the feeling of a conventional solid-color studio shoot. The photographer is highly experienced in handling foreground obstructions. Whether shooting through the gaps of the woven bamboo curtains or borrowing out-of-focus white crane feathers as a foreground, both techniques generated a wonderful sense of spatial depth in the frame.

The ancient-style four-cornered paper lantern I am holding in my hand is an important prop for this shoot. The lantern surface is printed with meticulous floral patterns, and keeping the handle balanced actually required a bit of careful thought. The sky-blue short hair paired with white flower hair accessories formed a well-ordered color clash in front of the red plum backdrop. As I moved around, I turned my body slightly, letting my back muscle lines and skin tone gleam under the warm light, which, combined with the cheongsam's tailoring, heavily tested the body's sense of extension.

Afterward, it was matched with that peacock feather folding fan. When leaning against the white plush cushions on the daybed, the blue-green luster reflecting from the peacock feathers formed an excellent hot-and-cold contrast with the red clothing. When shooting sitting poses, the photographer kept guiding me to adjust the placement angle of my legs, striving to make the leg ring and black high heels look more extended in the frame. For a Cheongsam cosplay look, this is a great entry point to showcase the character's posture.

In terms of facial expression, I did not deliberately force major expressions. Rem herself possesses a rather cool and focused temperament, and with this cheongsam, I wanted the frame to exude a touch of gentleness, so I simply maintained a natural gaze and a slightly raised chin gesture. Although the studio temperature on the day of the shoot was quite warm, standing for a long time in this red cheongsam plus platform shoes still felt quite heavy over the whole session. To present the best rim lighting effect, the lighting technician repeatedly adjusted the position of the side lights to make the shoulders' contours sharp while ensuring even lighting on the face, avoiding the issue of the main subject being isolated due to a background that was too dark.

This entire photo set can be considered a full realization of the shooting concepts conceived before the year-end. The combination of blue hair and a red cheongsam inherently carries a form of color tension, which, paired with these sophisticated Chinese items, made this photoshoot feel like a cross-dimensional environmental experience. The makeup and styling took two hours to refine the details, but ultimately seeing these light and shadow effects, edge silhouettes, and the fabric texture of the clothes in the final photos makes me feel that all the preparation was completely worth it.
