This set of photos for Hindenburg Qipao ver.02 is finally sorted out. Compared to the design of the initial version, this modified Qipao cosplay has undergone more adjustments in tailoring to fit the character, especially the cut-out design at the waist and the lace-up structure on the back, which both retains the traditional charm of the Chinese qipao and integrates more elements of anime fantasy and techwear. Paired with these sheer black stockings, set off by the wooden tables and chairs, the overall texture has indeed been elevated to a new level.
On the day of the shoot at the Qimi Huanjing studio, the set designer specially selected dark-colored Chinese solid wood furniture to lower the tone of the entire space, which is highly suitable for presenting strong contrast colors like red hair and black horns. The sharpness and composure originally inherent in the Iron Blood shipgirl collided with this environment full of Chinese-style ACG furnishings, sparking a unique exotic beauty instead. The reddish-brown long wavy wig was specially customized, showing a very obvious deep red luster under the light; the matching black curved horns and ear accessories can beautifully outline the facial contours under profile and low angles.
My favorite in the whole set is the composition of the first photo where I am sitting with my legs curled up, relying completely on the photographer's control over perspective to capture the lines of the legs and the sheen of the stockings perfectly. The second photo focuses more on creating an atmosphere; at that time, it was actually meant to express the moment she was quietly thinking or playing with the tassel prop in front of the desk. The warm yellow lantern light happened to hit from behind, forming a fine warm-and-cool contrast with the cool white fill light in the foreground, making the skin texture appear exceptionally delicate. The gold embroidery of the costume and the frog closures at the collar look highly exquisite under close-up shots.
Since it is a modified version of the qipao, more attention needs to be paid to the balance of the center of gravity in controlling postures, especially how to find leverage between crossing legs and the staggered high-and-low wooden chairs. I am used to aligning the action sequences with the photographer before starting the shoot—for instance, which angles focus on showcasing the back lines, and which angles are suitable for facial close-ups. This time we actually shot quite a few long shots holding a folding fan, echoing the red fruit branches in the background from afar. In post-processing, a uniform grayscale tone was maintained to let the red hair color become the visual focus. As a cosplayer, I am highly satisfied that this work can re-interpret her temperament through another costume language on the basis of maintaining the character's original setting.
