The inspiration for shooting this Arknights "Xingmeng Cepan" themed series stemmed from wanting to portray an ethereal presence wandering between the fringes of reality and dreams. To align with this concept, the pre-production phase was quite extensive. First was managing the wig: long pink hair can easily look cheap if mishandled, so I brushed and trimmed it carefully, thinning out the tips to keep the overall silhouette light and airy. The fluffy animal ears perched on the crown served as the quintessential soul accent; to prevent them from looking like rigid props, flexible craft wire was embedded inside to shape their angles, while hair spray was used to pinch and texture the fur fibers into organic, natural tufts. For headwear, I selected golden ornaments combining pearls and metallic textures, accented with soft light-blue details to enrich the color palette.
In terms of makeup, the overall direction was translucent and misty. The foundation was kept pristinely clean, focusing heavily on sculpting the eyes. Light pink contact lenses were paired with expansive blending of pink and red across the lower lids, evoking a hazy, tear-stained or subtly intoxicated illusion; complemented by broad cheek blush, it softened the facial contours remarkably. The lips were coated in a lustrous, sheer lip gloss to sustain the ethereal atmosphere.
The garment details are well worth diving into. The white outer robe utilizes fabric with a subtle luster, catching the illumination with a gorgeous sheen. Golden embroidery along the shoulders and cuffs is exquisitely delicate, infusing a sense of opulence into the look. Underneath is a soft light-blue skirt featuring subtle jacquard textures that create gentle, flowing drapes as I walked. To avoid overpowering the attire, accessories were curated around a delicate pearl necklace centered by crimson beads and a golden pendant. The wrist ornaments echoed the headdress, dialing the intricate accents to the max.
The shoot took place at night outdoors. To keep the compositions from feeling muted, we played the silhouetted cherry blossom branches against the dark nocturnal background. Regarding lighting design, a rim light was positioned diagonally behind me to illuminate through the pink wig and translucent edges of the beast ears, giving the fibers an ethereal halo. The face was sculpted by side-fill diffused through a softbox, preserving facial dimensionality. A haze machine on location, paired with floating ambient dust particles added in post-production, instantly brought the scene alive.
For posing choreography, the quiet, meditative atmosphere called for understated gestures rather than sweeping action. Seated on a wooden bench with my torso leaning subtly, one hand dropped naturally while the other rested gently against my chest, casting my gaze into the distance. During the shoot, I relaxed my body to slow down my rhythm and absorb the nocturnal tranquility, while the photographer gently directed to catch unscripted, candid moments.
Every time I shoot an aesthetic, romantic cosplay of this nature, the demands on physical stamina and emotional expression are considerable. Beyond the elaborate wardrobe and accessories, one must sustain a transcendent presence before the lens. From initial concept to final color grading, this series incorporated many personal touches—fine-tuning how to keep the pink hues soft and how to ensure the textures of the silk and wig shone under nocturnal lights. Seeing the final edits emerge with such dreamlike poetry made every bit of effort worthwhile.
