Bringing this pink and white Magical Girl outfit and the iconic Dream Wand, I came to this secret garden full of blooming hydrangeas. I specially chose the end of June for this shoot to catch the peak blooming season, hoping to use the blue, purple, pink, and white throughout the garden to reproduce Kinomoto Sakura's innocent, energetic, and gentle traits from Cardcaptor Sakura during this hydrangea outdoor location session.
Frankly, from the moment this shooting plan was set, I had been very anxious. To pursue that light and fluffy feel characteristic of the original Moe King, this wig alone took a lot of time just for trimming and styling. The green contact lenses worn had a very subtle translucent quality under the sun, and I am especially grateful for the photographer's patience in capturing so many vibrant moments. The wings and blue gemstone parts of the magic wand underwent multiple proportion adjustments during production to achieve a great visual balance.
The lighting on the day of the shoot was fantastic. When the sunshine filtered through the leaves onto the petals and headwear, the entire frame radiated a soft, warm texture. Sitting on the white iron bench enveloped by the flowers, I felt at that moment as if I had truly stepped from the 2D world into reality. Compared to studio shoots, I actually much prefer the texture of an authentic outdoor location; when the wind blows, the skirt hem and sheer tulle flutter naturally, delivering a dynamic movement that post-processing can never replicate.
For the costume materials, I intentionally chose a combination of sheer tulle and ribbons. Although I was terrified of getting the waist bow tie and the petal decorations on the skirt hem dirty during the shoot, these minor troubles could be entirely ignored for the sake of the final photo quality. The entire session lasted a few hours, and I almost got dizzy from the sun midway through, but seeing those shimmering green eyes and smiles in the completed photos made me feel everything was completely worth it.
Being able to complete this outdoor session was not only thanks to the seamless coordination with the photographer, but also to my own enduring love for this character. Although the original design has many different costume changes, I have always felt that this look filled with floral elements and a sense of lightness best conveys Kinomoto Sakura's gentleness. The meaning of photography is not just about accuracy, but more about using one's own way to remember that magical world that brought beautiful memories to countless people through this cosplay photoshoot.
I hope this set of Magical Girl photos under the summer hydrangeas can also bring you back to that original, gentle time. Even though so many years have passed, whenever I pick up this magic wand, I can still feel that fearless courage.
