Today, I am sharing the shooting process and styling concepts behind this black-palette New Chinese style outfit cheongsam photoshoot.
First and foremost was establishing the overarching aesthetic tone. Rather than opting for conventional bright cheongsams, I decided on a dark black palette. The outfit is a halter-neck, form-fitting Black cheongsam minidress tailored tightly to cleanly delineate the contours of the body. The fabric is adorned with expansive classical floral embroidery stitched mainly with gold and blue threads, creating exquisite visual depth. Black lace trim edges both the neckline and the hem, and to introduce even richer textural dimensionality, I paired it with flared black lace bell sleevelets—which not only soften the silhouette of the arms, but also inject an aura of dark vintage sophistication.
For the lower half, I styled sheer black pantyhose alongside glossy black patent leather pointed-toe stilettos. The sheer hosiery flawlessly sculpts leg lines, lending an even and delicate tone to the skin. The high-gloss sheen of patent leather pops brilliantly against wooden interiors, and the pointed toes visually elongate leg proportions. Because the garment itself was already dense with intricate details, the footwear was kept minimally sleek to avoid visual competition, emphasizing Stockings and beautiful legs.
In terms of hair and makeup, I chose an updo with blunt bangs accented by an oversized black satin ribbon bow pinned to the side, which decisively amplified a sweet-yet-edgy temperament. Given the dark attire, I intensified the blush and eye makeup so my features would stay vivid and radiant before the lens. A pair of long dangling golden floral earrings not only illuminated facial planes, but also formed a seamless chromatic harmony with the golden embroidery across the silk.
The shooting location was an indoor setting featuring Japanese-style timber verandas (engawa) and sliding shoji doors. The warm honey tones of the woodwork formed an intense visual clash against the black garments—a contrast that infused each frame with dramatic visual tension. For props, I prepared a tassel-draped black folding fan; this fan served not only as an ornate decorative accent, but also as an invaluable anchor for hand poses. Whenever pose ideas stalled, holding the fan to veil half the face or letting it drape naturally at my side instantly imbued the frame with cinematic narrative mystery in Chinese style photography.
Navigating poses and body posture revealed that seated positions are often harder to execute than standing ones. Because sitting can compress the torso, the core priority is maintaining elongation. For instance, while perched along the wooden veranda, extending crossed legs far outward with pointed insteps maximized the visual sweep of the legs. When seated sideways on the wooden deck, slightly bending the knees while arching the upper back slightly accentuated the curve of the waistline. Hand gestures were diversified: lightly cradling the cheek, touching the hair, tapping the fan tip across the knee, or resting arms naturally folded. Dropping and relaxing the shoulders while maintaining an engaged core allowed me to balance languid ease with grounded poise.
Regarding lighting, we relied primarily on ambient indoor bounce light combined with soft fill units, completely eschewing harsh key lights. Soft warm fill washed across the face to preserve skin translucency while faithfully rendering the metallic sheen of the embroidered threads and the delicate lace weave. The photographer continually encouraged subtle shifts in expression—locking onto the camera with direct confidence one moment, then looking away with aloof detachment the next.
Ultimately, although the palette leaned into shadows, the tactile collision of fabrics and layering of nuanced accents brought forth a singular Eastern elegance.
