[Saigyouji Yuyuko Cosplay] Ghost of Gensokyo, A Touhou Project Light and Shadow Story

This time, the Touhou Project Saigyouji Yuyuko cosplay photoshoot took a lot of thought from early prop preparation to the actual studio shoot. The focus was on recreating that atmosphere of the undead girl of Gensokyo, where gorgeousness and mysterious elegance coexist.

In terms of costume, this blue-and-white colored Lolita fashion dress features highly complex layers of lace and ruffles. It not only required meticulous adjustment of the sleeves' drape, but the off-the-shoulder neckline design also perfectly highlighted the character's softness. The shell and bow decorations on the headpiece, along with the pearl necklace and metal pendant around the neck, gave the overall styling a vintage texture. For the high heels, lace-up cross-strap sandals were used, and the exposed lines of the instep also added a visual crispness to the character's overall form.

Regarding the selection of props, the red folding fan serves as the visual anchor of the frame; its black ribbing forms a sharp contrast with the white floral patterns on it, and the holding posture needed slight angle adjustments to present a natural and at-ease state. The skeleton elements are the soul of this look. The skull I lean against in Figure 1 and the full skeleton structure I interact with in Figure 2 happen to echo the character's setting related to death. However, it didn't feel scary at all during the shoot; instead, these props added a layer of grotesque romance to the frame.

For the scene and lighting, the photographer also coordinated exceptionally well. The overall ambiance was set to a cool blue-purple tone, utilizing Japanese wooden lattice screen doors and the warm yellow backlighting filtering through to form an interwoven warm and cool light and shadow effect. Purple flowers were arranged as a foreground obstruction, which, through the lens's blur processing, generated a strong sense of layering, making the character look as if she were emerging from hazy clusters of blossoms. While shooting, the focus was on catching some static moments, such as slightly tilting the body and raising a hand to display the fan in Figure 1, which excellently guides the line of sight. The angle of interaction with the skeleton in Figure 2 was quite sophisticated; the placement of hands and feet had to align with the skeleton structure, while the gaze needed to maintain an indifferent, detached look, embodying the peak of Atmospheric photography.

In terms of makeup and hair, to complement the short pink hair, the foundation was made very clean and crisp. The eyebrow color and hair color made a gradient transition, and the eye makeup didn't use too many flashy colors, mainly enlarging the gaze through long eyelashes to make the facial features look more delicate. During the shooting process, I constantly communicated details with the photographer, such as how to arrange the folds of the skirt hem naturally and how to tilt the hat brim without blocking the light; these minute adjustments ultimately determined the effect of the final images.

Although the physical exertion from shooting this full set of images wasn't small, seeing the light and shadow texture of the final output makes me feel that the hard work was all worthwhile. The rich color collision among the blue light gauze, the red folding fan, and the white bone props preserves the elegant and fantasy setting of the original Touhou Project work while blending in the visual tension of Gothic style, hoping to present the unique temperament of Lady Yuyuko wandering in Gensokyo as everyone imagines her.
