[Saigyouji Yuyuko cosplay] Ink-Dyed Butterfly Fan Concept Styling and Costume Details Breakdown

This time, I cosplayed a fan-concept version of Saigyouji Yuyuko, centered on the theme of the Ink-dyed butterfly. To do justice to this concept, I devoted immense thought to refining the layered textures and garment details. The entire outfit is anchored in a blue-and-white palette, paired with a pink wig to evoke a dreamy yet enigmatic elegance. The bodice and skirt feature tiered layers of lace and fabric, with the waist corset and golden cord knots serving as the visual anchor. The exaggerated ruffled cuffs and the lace bonnet on my head are the soul of this styling; securing them required dozens of bobby pins and safety pins, making dressing up a true exercise in patience. The tassels and fabric blossoms across the skirt were all hand-sewn, offering a lovely drape and dynamic motion with every movement. Paired with the white lace thigh-high stockings (Stockings cosplay) on the lower half, the cascading sheer tulle skirt not only visually elongates the leg silhouette but also infuses the ensemble with airy weightlessness.

The layered navy jacquard cape is wonderfully heavy; the fabric itself bears woven patterns that catch studio lights with varying sheens. Because this is a fan-made concept, I wove in several personal touches regarding accessories—such as the blue tassel prop in my hand and the blue-and-white bow on the floor—all to flesh out the character's persona. When capturing this set, I took mirror selfies because I wanted to focus directly on garment tailoring and construction, using my phone to obscure my face. I added some protective text stickers over the first image, hoping everyone will keep their eyes on the craftsmanship, so please bear with me!

To capture this ensemble at its best, I spent considerable time dialing in the studio lights. Cool-toned illumination rendered the blues purer while making the pink hair pop crisply. With such an intricate outfit, I experimented with multiple profile angles; the third photo clearly displays the cape's silhouette and the rear fabric weave. Bringing such an extensive project to life always feels deeply rewarding; from pattern drafting to accessory assembly, overseeing every phase personally is why I adore cosplay. Though the process was exhausting, seeing the final outcome in the photos made every hardship worthwhile. Next, I'll take a brief rest to scout other exciting concepts, eager to present more compelling character designs down the line.

For fabric selection, I intentionally chose subtly shimmering satin for the inner undergarment so it wouldn't look flat when contrasted against the white lace. The main blue gown utilizes fabric with a delicate damask texture, elevating the material presence while honoring the poetic grace of the name Ink-dyed butterfly. As for wig styling, the pink wavy curls might seem casual, but the inner layers were reinforced with plenty of hairspray, with the bangs flat-ironed to frame my face while retaining a breezy, fluttery texture.

Regarding makeup, even though my face was obscured in the photos, I still dedicated time to designing the look. The complexion aimed for clean clarity, using blue-violet toned eyeshadow to harmonize with the attire, complemented by slightly more pronounced blush for healthy radiance. Since the pink wig was already a vibrant visual centerpiece, I chose a natural dewy lip gloss to maintain a cool yet spirited aura.

To touch on subtle shooting nuances: the second picture uses a closer framing to showcase the lace textures and metallic buckles in detail. The golden braided cord and tassels at the waist produce a crisp clinking sound with every step—subtle sensory details like this elevate character immersion. Due to limited studio space, I used a black tripod to assist with fill lighting, guaranteeing balanced contrast across every frame. For hosiery, I chose patterned jacquard stockings to ensure leg textures remained visible even in full-body shots without looking plain.

When cosplaying Touhou Project, what I adore most is the boundless imagination of fan-concept creators. The Ink-dyed butterfly concept granted immense creative freedom, allowing me to combine lavish lace, ruffles, bows, and a regal cloak into one cohesive piece. Although moving in this attire was quite restricted—and the heavy layers nearly had me sweating under the studio lights—seeing the opulent, cascading results in the final photos brought an immense sense of accomplishment. I hope this obsession with craftsmanship shines through to fellow Touhou fans and lovers of ornate garments.
