[Saigyouji Yuyuko cosplay] Touhou Project: Elegant Serenity Beneath the Yozakura at Nightfall

The theme of this photoshoot is Saigyouji Yuyuko from Touhou Project. This photo set overall pursues a fusion of an Elegant aesthetic with a Spirit photograph style. Since Yuyuko in the original canon possesses ethereal and airy qualities, placing her in a setting with Yozakura and cool mist was particularly fitting.

Regarding pre-production preparations: I really liked the fine strand texture of the short pink wig, which was paired with this classic blue-and-white lace dress and an oversized lace bonnet that took quite a while to put on. For makeup, I intentionally aimed for a cool and aloof feel; the tear stain on my cheek was actually created with eye drops, complementing a melancholic expression to enhance the authenticity of the atmosphere. For props, I chose a folding fan with blue-purple patterns, half-concealing my face to express the character's mystical aura.

The location chosen was a grove of Yozakura under very dark night conditions, relying entirely on lighting design. The main difficulty of this Saigyouji Yuyuko cosplay shoot lay in controlling the ambient light. Because the surroundings were pitch-black with minimal ambient spill, we had to carefully calibrate the cool-toned fill light so that, within this dim environment, the blue-and-white dress and the pink cherry blossoms formed a striking contrast, enhanced in post-processing with subtle mist textures to evoke a dreamlike sensation.

During shooting, we discussed compositions. The photographer used blurred cherry blossoms in the foreground as a framing device to nestle the character within. The shoot mainly captured that lonely, unattached look of not gazing into the camera, looking sideways to give the image narrative depth. The angle of the folding fan and shoulder heights were adjusted multiple times to faithfully recreate the character's airy, slightly sorrowful posture.

Shooting on a winter night meant the night breeze was quite chilly. I bundled up in a heavy padded coat between takes, but seeing the crisp, chilly atmosphere on the monitor made everything worthwhile. The lace trims and skirt hem caught on twigs several times, requiring great care to avoid damage. We tested many angles for holding the fan, ultimately finding that half-concealing the face best matched this intertwining of Elegant poise and ghostly melancholy.

For hair and makeup, eye makeup avoided heavy coloring, relying mainly on extended eyeliner to add an otherworldly touch, rendered into a vacant gaze under the lighting. Post-processing focused on warm-cool contrast, preserving the pink brightness of the cherry blossoms while deepening overall shadows and eliminating extraneous color casts. The fabric texture and silky sheen of the dress were beautifully accentuated under the lights. To convey her otherworldly detachment, movements were kept small with a deliberate, slow shooting pace. I am very satisfied with the final quality of this Touhou Project set, and I hope everyone can feel Saigyouji Yuyuko's unique presence beneath this Yozakura grove.
