For my 15th Birthday cosplay, I chose Flandre Scarlet from Touhou Project, building the entire shoot around a Vintage Lolita and gothic theme fitting for the Scarlet Devil Mansion. The red-and-white dress is rich in design, featuring intricate details in the layered lace skirt and ruffles. To achieve an expansive, fluffy silhouette, I used a sturdy, wide pannier petticoat. The red vest over the white shirt boasts delicate pleating at the neckline and cuffs, which, paired with lace-trimmed white socks and red leather shoes, aligns seamlessly with the character's classic Lolita aesthetic. For hair and makeup, a blonde wig with crimson contact lenses and subtly elongated red eye makeup added an enigmatic charm.
The set was arranged in a vintage studio featuring dark walls adorned with golden moldings and reliefs, an antique red velvet sofa, and ornate golden chairs. Golden silk draped across the floor was surrounded by red roses, candles, and an old-fashioned gramophone, giving the environment a dramatic, theatrical presence. The bold contrast between dark tones and rich gold under warm yellow spotlights lent the photos an exceptional, painterly depth.
Props included a teddy bear, red apples, and a skull. While posing seated, I angled my legs to showcase the drape of the skirt and leg lines, which looked stunning alongside the red Mary Janes. Holding the apple and skull required an expression that blended pure innocence with a dangerous edge; guided by the photographer through various sitting and reclining angles, we captured the exact tension I envisioned.
As a milestone birthday piece, I poured everything into portraying the character faithfully. Enduring awkward postures for hours and navigating polished wooden floors in platform shoes was exhausting, but seeing the final photos made every effort worthwhile. The warm light washing over the red dress created an oil-painting quality, while the warmth of the plush bear juxtaposed against the eerie skull produced a captivating contrast. This shoot serves as both a tribute to Touhou Project and an unforgettable celebration of turning fifteen.
