Taking advantage of early cherry blossoms in full bloom, I finally shot this fan-made design look for Saigyouji Yuyuko that I had been preparing for over half a month. To be honest, this outfit really tested my patience: from the outer light blue-gray sheer tulle garment to the inner multi-layered white dress, every layer featured hand-sewn lace edges and beaded strings, taking nearly forty minutes just to put on and take off. The headpiece was my most conflicted part; I originally wanted a more classical style, but to align with the lightweight, Dreamy style of Fan-made design cosplay, I ultimately chose blue-and-white mother-of-pearl textured accessories with a metallic sheen, paired with intentionally curled wavy pink short hair to distinguish it from the original straight hair. The final effect turned out surprisingly well.
The location was chosen in a park filled with early cherry blossoms. The trunks were painted white at the base, which, paired with full clusters of pink flowers across the sky, made a huge natural backdrop. The photographer adjusted camera positions to let me stand under trees with low-hanging branches. The dark blue folding fan held in my hand was custom-made, with silver patterns on the fan surface and a tassel belt at the waist creating color coordination; within the large color blocks of pink, white, and light blue, the dark blue played a wonderful role in anchoring the frame. It was an overcast day with very soft diffuse light, so the sheer tulle sleeves fluttered in the wind, and lace edges cast faint shadows under the light. The raw photos possessed a strong ambient feel even without heavy post-processing.
Speaking of Fan-made design cosplay, I personally lean towards this direction of modification—retaining Yuyuko's iconic pink tones and cool temperament while incorporating more tailoring logic from modern fashion, such as stacked ruffles at the cuffs, layered waist belt structures, and faint dark patterns on the semi-translucent outer robe. Regarding props, besides serving as a visual focal point, the folding fan was practical on set for blocking branches to give the frame more depth. However, it was quite windy on shoot day, and the fan nearly slipped from my grip several times, but fortunately my fan-holding pose looked natural in the final photos.
I rarely attempt this sort of ethereal style usually, as overly complex lace and tulle can easily look bulky, but choosing lightweight faux-chiffon and mesh with a cinched waist design yielded a surprisingly slim silhouette overall. Makeup was kept minimalist too, opting for a mauve lip glaze instead of bold red lips, with light pink eyeshadow blending paired with reddish-brown contact lenses, conveying a hint of a spirit's melancholy without looking excessively gloomy. Light pink pearlescent nail polish satisfied my inner detail lover completely.
A small anecdote happened during shooting: a passing older lady asked if I was taking wedding photos. I explained it was roleplay/cosplay for Touhou Project, and she repeatedly praised how beautiful the outfit was, even voluntarily helping me hold up a bent flower branch. Such accidental kindness always warms up outdoor shoots. In truth, doing cosplay every time feels like a brief time travel: putting on character attire, holding corresponding props, and standing in suitable settings naturally brings one's mood closer to that character's atmosphere—even if it's a fan-made design, it represents a creative resonance.
I personally love the main shot selected in the end, featuring an overwhelming floral canopy composition where person and blossoms blend together, while the blue folding fan pulls the subject back out from the flower clusters. Reviewing these photos, I feel this might be my most satisfying outdoor Sakura Photograph set this spring. Without forcing complex poses, simply standing there as wind blows hair and sleeves into gentle curves, the rest is left to the shutter speed and light filtering through flower branches. I hope to find more places with dense blossom trees and soft lighting in the future to keep creating memorable Touhou Project works.
