[Youmu Konpaku cosplay] Touhou Project: The Netherworld Gardener, A Half-Human, Half-Phantom Aesthetic

The core focus of this Touhou Project Youmu Konpaku cosplay photoshoot was to faithfully recreate the cool, sharp, and disciplined details of the ghostly gardener. The silver-white wig is the soul of the look; the bangs were deliberately trimmed just above the eyebrows, with layered sidelocks, which—paired with translucent blue contact lenses (Silver hair and blue eyes)—brought intense focus to the gaze from a frontal angle. Selecting the outfit took considerable thought: the beige jacquard long-sleeved shirt is substantial with a subtle texture, overlaid with a deep navy vest featuring golden crescent moon patterns. Although the black-and-gold edged bow tie at the collar was tricky to tie, it gave the entire silhouette a crisp, upright posture.

Before shooting, I brainstormed various poses, ultimately experimenting with three distinct postures across this set. Photos 1 and 2 used a centered, frontal camera angle to emphasize the texture of the silver hair and the piercing coolness of the blue eyes. Photo 3 featured a profile stance resting the katana sword over the shoulder while leaning against the background wall, creating an intersecting composition between the prop lines and body contours to lend greater narrative depth. Photo 4 adopted a low-angle shot, which was physically exhausting—requiring a constant upward tilt of the head while raising the sword high to frame the face and lock eye contact, leaving my neck genuinely sore. The tightly wrapped cord wrapping on the prop hilt gave it substantial weight, adding grounded stability to every pose.

Soft, even flat lighting was used across this set to showcase the makeup details to the greatest extent. In post-production, we preserved the dark wood grain textures of the background, using low-key tones to accentuate the brightness of the silver hair. Given her Half-human, half-phantom character lore, I kept my gaze deep and piercing, as an unsmiling, cool composure best suits her tranquil, disciplined persona. The focal point of this set lies not in skin exposure, but in the tailored drape of the garments and their crisp lines. The slim-cut vest paired with sleeve folds perfectly expressed the sharp agility of a combat retainer and Japanese swordsman. Though the attire is relatively modest, the rich jacquard fabric texture and refined color palette are the true heart of this shoot. Despite repeated adjustments to the bow tie and fringe grooming, we ultimately captured well-balanced compositions and the exact right expression—making the final result deeply satisfying.
