"Medicine decides life." This phrase resonated constantly in my mind, becoming the core emotional anchor of this creative project. Preparing for this outdoor Apothecary Maomao cosplay photoshoot required thorough preliminary groundwork. Starting with the wig styling, in order to shape the two side buns into subtle cat-ear silhouettes, I combed and adjusted the curved base repeatedly, trimming the blunt front bangs clean and neat. The ends were tied into low twin tails secured with red-and-blue hair scrunchies, paired with delicate dangling earrings to retain her iconic design while infusing fresh everyday vivacity. For the costume, I chose a vibrant combination of blush pink and jade green: an airy pink outer robe worn over a deep crimson crossed collar, cinched tightly at the waist with a lime-green sash. The flowing hem of the skirt draped with exceptional elegance in motion, finished with flat green cloth slippers suited for strolling across garden paths.
The location chosen was a classical garden brimming with ancient architectural charm. Sunlight filtered through dense foliage, casting dappled chiaroscuro patterns across blue flagstones and vermilion pillars. Ornate pavilions, deep crimson columns, carved emerald balustrades, and the lotus pond beyond the covered walkway served as a natural cinematic stage. I particularly loved using architectural framing, such as standing between two red pillars or resting upon the veranda balustrade bench, introducing wonderful visual depth. The afternoon sun bathed the set in warm amber tones; shooting backlit traced the perimeter of my hair in glowing halos, while the skirt swayed in the breeze, making the white underskirt shimmer softly—capturing the exact misty, ethereal classical ambiance I envisioned.
Props added immense narrative texture throughout the session. Holding a white folding fan, alternating between unfurling and snapping it shut alongside pensive downcast glances or distant stares, cleanly conveyed the character's calm, observant intellect. Sitting by the wooden railing turning through pages of a book while cradling a handkerchief, time felt suspended. To inject kinetic life into the frames, I paced slowly along the corridor and executed gentle turns, letting the wide cuffs and tiered skirts billow freely, with the photographer capturing these fleeting moments with razor-sharp timing. Every shutter click was a dialogue with light.
Portraying Maomao meant peeling back superficial theatrics to channel that sweet spot between razor-sharp wit and quiet, introverted gentleness. From delicate fingers pinching the white handkerchief to the slightly unfocused gaze watching the far horizon, every detail was meant to express her essence. Outdoor photography tests both stamina and patience—moving ceaselessly through corridors and rockeries chasing optimal lighting while minding garment drape and wig placement. Yet seeing the raw frames woven with light and shadow made every ounce of effort worthwhile. Sincere gratitude goes to photographer @灬小吃 for expert visual direction; our aesthetic alignment was effortless, hitting the perfect shutter timing every time. This outdoor journey was not only a loving tribute to the character, but also a cherished milestone in my photography journey.
