[Asuna Cosplay] An Afternoon Glance in the Old Classroom

This campus theme photoset was taken in a highly nostalgic old classroom in Chongqing. The genuine wooden desks and chairs, the weathered red wooden window frames, and the dark green old blackboard behind me instantly maxed out the atmosphere for this Asuna school uniform look. The unique tranquility of these old Chongqing campuses is truly rare, and with the perfect afternoon sunlight, it was simply a natural reflector.

The uniform was what took the most effort during preparation. The deep blue blazer features white piping, and the customized yellow emblem on the collar has a great texture. Underneath, the white shirt was paired with a red ribbon bowtie, which took several attempts to adjust to the most natural and well-fitted angle. The wig was the most crucial part to smooth out. Although wearing a wig with bangs and side braids is very flattering for the face shape, keeping it fluffy without looking frizzy on camera took a lot of effort. To recreate her naturally flowing yet layered look, I even fine-tuned the natural texture of the bangs' parting.

The lighting on the day of the shoot was absolutely amazing. The 3:30 PM sunlight pierced through the red window frames into the classroom, bathing the entire space in a warm, golden glow. The photographer's capture timing was impeccable, especially during those backward glance shots, where the halo perfectly fell on my golden hair and the top of my head, forming a beautiful and soft rim light. Although the indoor natural light made it difficult to manage the transition between light and shadow, combined with the shallow depth of field of the wide aperture, it softened the crowded desks and weathered look of the background into a atmospheric backdrop, further accentuating the clear, transparent quality of the subject.

We tried many different states for this shoot, from the quietness of holding a book to read, the laziness of taking an afternoon nap on the desk, to leaning on my hand and looking out the window while spacing out, and that set of backward glances standing among the desks. My favorite angle is the backward glance—it showcases the silhouette of the entire uniform while elegantly revealing the natural leg lines under the pleated skirt. In a classroom scene that comes with its own retro filter, there was no need to deliberately strike exaggerated poses. A slight turn of the body or casually resting a hand on the schoolbag naturally radiated the youthful energy of everyday school life.

Finding a classroom with authentic wooden desks and chairs in Chongqing is actually not easy. Although the school buildings of some old campuses are still there, many classrooms have been remodeled or closed off. We climbed the stairs to the third floor, and when we pushed open that sheet metal door and saw the neatly arranged old desks and chairs covered in dust on the windowsills, we instantly knew this location was the right choice. The wooden tabletop had a subtle reflection, and sitting there felt as if I had truly returned to my student days when my mind was filled with nothing but schoolwork and slacking off.

The photographer was also extremely patient during the shoot because the angle of the natural light shifted very quickly; every time we changed scenes, we had to readjust our positions to capture that brightest beam of light. To keep the frames clean, we specifically avoided modern buildings outside the window that might break the illusion. The shot of reading by the window also had a great vibe; as I held the book pretending to read, the golden sunlight spilled in from the side, illuminating the edges of my clothes, making even my breathing seem to slow down. The vitality in these quiet frames beautifully made up for the loneliness of the empty classroom.

Overall, this photoset retains a strong sense of breathing room. We didn't pile up too many flashy props or heavy post-processing effects. The photographer focused more on the contrast of classroom light and shadow and the natural flow of facial expressions. Even if just sitting on a wooden chair or lightly leaning against a desk, as long as the light hits right, it can present entirely different emotions. This is also the most fascinating part of shooting a campus theme photoset—experiencing the character's inner emotions in different environments.

This trip to Chongqing was truly worth it. The scent of wood in the old classroom, the warmth of the sun, and the wisps of hair blown by the wind all became frozen moments on the negatives. I hope those who see these photos can feel the school youth vibe I wanted to convey.
