This photoshoot series featuring a black-and-white checkered gothic maid outfit left me thoroughly satisfied, from wardrobe coordination to the lighting during the night shoot. The outfit comes from Malymoon, adopting a cool palette of black, white, and grey, while incorporating numerous dark yet playful gothic accents that perfectly bring out the distinct ambiance of Japanese Anime-style fashion.
The headpiece is a black-and-white checkered ruffled headband flanked by black bat wings. To add a touch of contrast, I paired it with slim metal round-frame glasses, which immediately introduced a gentle, intellectual flair.
The top is an off-the-shoulder grey knit inner garment tied with a black ribbon bow at the neckline, featuring a bold chest cutout bordered with black bat-wing motifs. The arms are fitted with matching knit detached sleeves wrapped with thin black ribbons printed with the letters 'LOVE SECRET'—though mirrored and somewhat inverted, it serves as an exquisite detail.
The bottom half is styled with a tiered, pleated black-and-white checkered skirt, layered over with a small black apron adorned with gold buttons and printed with 'Molly'. The outfit has remarkable depth, and the ruffled hem moves with dynamic grace when walking.
The pairing of footwear and hosiery is a personal favorite. I selected a pair of high-shine glossy Black stockings that reflect beautifully under the flash, accentuating the leg lines while looking slimming and rich in texture. They were paired with black patent leather Mary Jane shoes featuring heart-shaped buckles, which neatly softened the dark edge of the overall look with a hint of maidenly playfulness.
For makeup, I accentuated the depth of the eyes to complement the long wavy brown wig, finished with vibrant red lips that formed a sharp, striking contrast against the monochrome garments. My nails were styled with long press-ons embellished with rhinestones and 3D charms, matched with silver rings to polish off the details.
The shoot took place outdoors at night, where the dark backdrop proved ideal for this Gothic style. We used frontal fill lighting to cleanly separate the subject from the background, turning blurry city lights into gorgeous bokeh. For natural poses, I used a suitcase as a prop, sitting atop it with legs crossed to fully highlight the lines of the Black stockings and shoes. The standing poses focused on showcasing the side tailoring of the dress and the strappy ribbon details along the arms.
