Conducting a cosplay photoshoot for the character Cifera in Honkai: Star Rail requires a high level of overall expressiveness from the outfit and the capture of personal emotions. Actually, when preparing this look, what attracted me the most was the pair of plush-textured beast ears on the cat ear hood and the overall black, blue, and gold interwoven color scheme. A character like this, carrying a touch of Eastern fantasy elements, highly tests the cleanliness of the makeup and the expressiveness of the gaze. I specially chose bright blue colored contacts to match the character's eye color, paired with a light gray-white hair color, visually creating a pure yet slightly detached feel of silver hair and blue eyes.
In terms of the clothing texture, the leather reflection of the coat and the craftsmanship of the metal armor are the highlights. The red and blue gemstone spheres on the shoulder armor and the fluffy cat-head pendant around the neck focus the visual center of gravity of the upper body heavily. The golden textures on the arm sleeves and the metallic sheen of the leg armor reflect great rim light against the studio's blue gradient background. This inherently provides an excellent light and shadow framework for the final images.
In the choreography of the poses, I tried to mimic the randomness and flexibility of felines. For instance, when sitting on the floor resting my chin in my hand, my gaze needs to carry a slight look of scrutiny; when lying down to stretch, the overall extended line should be elongated as much as possible to highlight the thigh lines exposed by the lower part of the outfit and the styled look of the golden high-heeled boots. In a squatting or low-crouching pose, the natural drop and resonance of the tail make the entire composition look very harmonious. During the shooting process, because the cat ear hood is relatively large, turning my head sometimes blocked my view, which required the photographer to guide me with sound to adjust my facial orientation, thereby capturing the most natural response.
Additionally, the overall atmosphere actually echoed my mood today. The focus of this work is not on explosive special effects or complex backgrounds, but rather on using a clean studio shoot to amplify that subtle sense of whether the character is friend or foe in her eyes. The reflective materials of the clothing have a certain highlight reflection under the lights, which, combined with the geometric cutting of the metal parts, yields a very three-dimensional, lean beauty in high-angle or eye-level shots. Looking at the actual results of the studio shoot, the photographer's control over the light was highly precise; it didn't let the clothes go completely pitch black and dark, while preserving the uniquely sharp edges of the metal, achieving a nice point of balance for the character's style between softness and sharpness. Even when appearing alone, as long as the state is on point, that mysterious and confident aura flows out naturally.
The delivery of the gaze and the control of facial micro-expressions are key to this shoot. For a character with a touch of mystery like Cifera, one cannot smile too naively; there must be that sort of half-smile look. I was very restrained when making expressions, pairing them with light-toned eyeshadow and slender, elongated eyeliner to emphasize the sharpness of the corners of the eyes. Moreover, for a character with beast ear elements, the tilting angle of the head is very critical; tilting the head slightly along with hand movements can instantly display the cat's cunningness and cuteness simultaneously.
In terms of props, another highlight is actually that long gradient tail. The tail, transitioning from white to a dark color at the tip, served as an excellent visual anchor in lying or kneeling poses, balancing the weight of the upper body garment. When setting up the lights, the photographer specifically used backlighting to outline the contours of the tail and hair strands, giving the entire picture a bit more transparent airiness. Despite the lack of an outdoor shoot, a solid-color background paired with this clean lighting method is instead very suitable for the anime-style reproduction of the character. Going to the studio and capturing this kind of effect carrying the character's personal traits is an experience well worth recording.
Before the shoot, I was actually quite anxious because this kind of clothing with black and blue as the primary color scheme can easily look dull, so I specifically communicated with the photographer to select a clear light blue gradient to white for the background color, utilizing hot-and-cold contrast to elevate the premium feel of the photos. During the shooting process, I noticed that the metal ring decorations on the cat ear hood and the center of gravity of the neck pendant were quite forward-leaning, making some half-bent low-angle shots rather disadvantageous, easily making it look top-heavy. Therefore, we mostly adopted low-angle and high-angle shots to adjust the perspective relationships; for instance, the lying one and the squatting one were both captured from quite special angles, yielding surprisingly good results.
Furthermore, not only should the poses mimic a cat's movements, but the way of eye contact should also change. The gaze cannot just stare dead at the lens the whole time; one needs to pretend to look sideways from time to time, or suddenly lock eyes with the camera at the moment of freezing, creating a mood of being discovered. This process of roleplaying is incredibly fun, allowing me to fully immerse myself in a small animal's world for an hour. Every detail of a movement required thinking about whether it fit this character's identity setting. The wig was also carefully trimmed, and the stray hairs on both sides perfectly framed the face, which, paired with the slightly curled braids, added a touch of docility. Although the whole process was a bit exhausting because the armor and boots are made of rigid materials, when seeing the texture of the clothing, the layers of light and shadow, and the charm in the gaze in the raw proofs, I felt that all the preparation was well worth the value. This is exactly the charm of cosplay photography—materializing a flat setting through three-dimensional dressing and performance.
