When doing this Blue Archive Iochi Mari gym uniform cosplay, I wanted to set the scene in a classroom right from the early planning stage, completing this Cosplay photoshoot in a relatively relaxed, true-to-life way.
I chose a light blonde wig and styled it into her two iconic buns and flowing hair, leaving layers on both sides to frame the face. Paired with a white headband and a small flower decoration on the side, it kept the overall look visually fresh. For the makeup, I tried to stay as close to the character's design as possible, using blue contact lenses to match the light blonde hair. I kept the eye makeup minimal, emphasizing the natural flow of the eyelashes to avoid an overly heavy stage look, striving to come close to a daily campus state.
As for the costume, the gym uniform consists of a white T-shirt paired with dark blue gym shorts, which can be layered with a blue, white, and yellow zippered sports jacket. This kind of tracksuit is made of a lightweight fabric with a slight stretch, so it doesn't look bulky when worn. Combined with white over-the-knee socks and a pair of glossy brown leather shoes, it forms a very classic Japanese school outfit. The orange lanyard and blank ID card around the neck are playful details in the overall styling, enhancing immersion in this specific setting.
The scene for this set was chosen in a realistically restored classroom environment, featuring wooden desks and chairs and grayish-white metal storage lockers. To enrich the visuals, I arranged some props in advance, including a silver vintage radio on the desk, a transparent drink bottle, the matching sports jacket draped over the back of the chair, and even a small plushie placed in the corner below the locker. These small objects filled the blank spaces in the composition, making the entire space look much more filled with the atmosphere of real school life.
During the actual shoot, I tried various compositions tailored to different actions. For example, sitting on a desk with one leg naturally hanging down while playing with my hair with my hand was an attempt to present a casual and relaxed posture during recess. There was also an angle where I sat on the floor leaning against the locker; by using a low camera position and perspective principles, it beautifully preserved the lines of the legs and the contour of the shorts. When interacting while holding the water bottle in hand, the reflection on the bottle also added some translucent texture to the frame.
In terms of lighting, the photographer is highly skilled at utilizing the natural light from outside the window, passing through that layer of white semi-transparent sheer curtain to form a very soft diffuse reflection that illuminated the entire room. During post-processing, the main effort was focused on restoring physical textures, appropriately enhancing the cleanliness of the white T-shirt and white over-the-knee socks, while retaining the texture details of the wooden floor and metal lockers, giving the overall high-key frame a breathable feel.
The advantage of shooting this kind of athletic school uniform is that body movement is unrestricted, allowing for many natural, everyday actions. In fact, when shooting this daily style of cosplay, it's hard to express the character through exaggerated poses; most of the time, it relies on eyes, sitting postures, and hand placementsâthese subtle body languagesâto convey that pure, relaxed vibe. The entire process went very smoothly, and the final results achieved the atmospheric goals set during the early stages.
