I've finally sorted through a portion of my convention photos from Firefly ACG Expo. I cosplayed Mari Iochi from Blue Archive; this Maid outfit coupled with animal ears hits every single one of my aesthetic soft spots. To do justice to this styling, I prepared a long blonde wig styled into twin braids beforehand, with the serrated yellow star-shaped hair accessory and fluffy fox ears serving as the soul of the entire ensemble. For makeup, I opted for eye-enlarging techniques paired with soft pink lipstick and light-colored lenses, aiming to mirror her gentle disposition. As for the costume, the short-sleeved black dress was layered beneath a crisp white apron adorned with generous ruffles and anchored by a black ribbon bow at the collar. The skirt hem and cuffs featured delicate black lace trimming, paired with white over-the-knee socks and black buckled Mary Janes, finished off with extended nails accented with tiny yellow motifs. The clean monochrome palette looked immaculate on camera while radiating an adorable aura.
The most eye-catching prop during this shoot was definitely the colossal brown feather duster in my hands. Don't let its light and airy look deceive you—holding and maneuvering it across varied poses demanded genuine arm stamina. To keep the duster in peak visual shape, I spent considerable downtime between shots smoothing its plumage to prevent excessive frizz. In a dense, bustling expo hall, finding clean angles devoid of wandering attendees takes razor-sharp observation. Although the venue was air-conditioned, walking around in a structured Maid outfit and a heavy wig kept the perceived temperature quite high—truly the epitome of cosplay's bittersweet, painful-yet-joyful journey.
Lighting inside the pavilion presented a major test. Strong natural daylight poured through the expansive glass curtain wall on the right, which risked overexposure but also sculpted crisp dimensional depth across the frame. To discover flattering perspectives, I explored diverse stances. Sitting on the floor extending my legs toward the lens beautifully showcased the white over-the-knee socks and Mary Janes, utilizing foreshortening perspective to make legs appear longer while raising or resting the feather duster added dynamic kinetic motion. Crouching while reaching the duster toward the lens leveraged shallow depth-of-field blur from a wide aperture, giving the frame powerful visual punch. Standing poses simulated sweeping or brandishing the duster mid-action, lifting one leg slightly to keep the silhouette light and agile. At times, capturing the plumage at the precise apex of motion required multiple iterations of timing and force.
Shooting at a comic convention is genuinely challenging: crowds flow constantly through the hall, and passersby or fellow cosplayers inevitably drift into the background. However, the grey reflective floor and the venue's geometric structural lines formed a sleek, minimalist canvas of their own. After a full day of shooting, pacing around in heeled footwear took its toll—the soles of my feet were protesting fiercely—but seeing these crystalline, luminous convention shots on the camera screen made every ounce of effort worthwhile. I had a wonderful time at Firefly ACG Expo, meeting so many supportive photographers and attendees who helped watch luggage and adjust wardrobe details; the community spirit was heartwarming. There remains plenty of room to refine this Mari Iochi setup—such as smoothing wig flyaways further and pruning the prop feathers for a fuller silhouette. I hope to return in even better form next time with stronger works, continuing to relish the thrill of roleplay at conventions.
