[Kochiya Sanae Cosplay] Summer Hydrangea Imprint at Nagaosan Myorakuji Temple

It was exactly noon when we arrived at Nagaosan Myorakuji Temple. The sunlight filtered through the dense treetops, casting mottled light and shadows onto the grayish-white stone steps. Shot on June 22nd, this temple nestled halfway up the mountain was precisely in the peak viewing season for hydrangeas. The bushes on both sides of the stone steps were bursting with blue-purple and light pink flower clusters interlaced with lush greenery, packing the entire location with a tranquil yet vibrant Japanese atmosphere.

For the costume plan of this shoot, I selected a basic navy blue JK uniform combination. The inner layer is a white long-sleeved shirt topped with a deep blue V-neck knit vest, and paired with a color-matched pleated mini skirt on the lower body. To align with a realistic daily school-commute feel, I also chose black knee-high socks matched with dark brown leather shoes, with a black-and-white color-blocked sporty backpack slung over my shoulder. The overall styling didn't deliberately pursue a flashy stage presence, but aimed instead to present a natural state integrated into the environment within such an everyday natural setting.

Regarding props, I prepared a dedicated piece combining a shimenawa with a gohei wand format. This is one of the iconic elements of the character Kochiya Sanae in Touhou Project. For role-playing photography, props serve not only as symbols of identity but also as a bridge for the character to interact with the scene. During the shooting process, I utilized this long-pole prop to try many different interactive styles: resting it lightly on my shoulder, holding it hanging by my side, or slanting it in front of me like a staff, utilizing these subtle behavioral changes to enhance the dynamic vividness of the frames.

The photographer Maruneko was exceptionally professional in composition and light capturing. We mainly utilized the diagonal lines of the black metal handrails beside the steps to extend the line of sight upwards along the staircase. The small stone Buddha statue at the top of the steps served beautifully as the visual endpoint of the frame, giving the entire photo an abundance of spatial depth through this linear layout. Moments of looking back and brief instances of leaning sideways against the railing were all recorded by the lens. Especially the light around two or three in the afternoon, filtering down through the gaps in the leaves and hitting the uniform and knee socks, formed an incredibly beautiful contrast of light and dark, giving the texture an exceptionally soft look.

The color layers of the hydrangeas are incredibly rich, showing a subtle gradient from the core to the edges of the petals. During post-processing, we intentionally brightened the highlights slightly and lowered the contrast in the shadows to preserve a soft, film-like texture, doing our best to avoid over-tweaking the colors of the flowers and leaves so the overall tone feels more breathable. The vegetation here at Nagaosan Myorakuji Temple is dense; even during periods of direct sunlight, part of the light gets filtered out by the uneven tree canopy, creating beautiful diffuse reflections, which provides highly friendly lighting conditions for an outdoor cosplay session.

The entire process of the shoot was actually far more relaxed than imagined; within a setting so full of natural healing power, my mood relaxed along with it. An occasional gentle breeze blew past, drifting the scent of hydrangeas mixed with green grass and soil through the air, allowing me to swiftly enter that quiet and refreshing everyday state designated by the character. Although the day's shoot came with some physical exertion, ultimately being able to freeze this unique temperament of Kochiya Sanae together with the beautiful memories of summer hydrangeas is an incredibly meaningful achievement in itself.
