Adding to my homepage's Touhou Project cosplay series, I chose Alice Margatroid cosplay. To honor the ambiance described as 'a maiden singing, poised like a doll,' considerable care went into styling, hair, makeup, and photography.
First, let's talk about the wardrobe coordination. I wore an ornate Lace dress predominantly crafted from white lace, featuring expansive lace frills across the neckline and shoulders paired with a deep crimson ribbon bow tie. To elevate the sense of elegance, a pearl necklace and pale blue bow were accented across the chest, while the soft bonnet served as the centerpiece of the entire outfit—its brim layered with cascading lace ruffles, adorned with delicate flowers and dangling bead strings. These intricate details might easily be overlooked at a glance, but wearing them genuinely requires deliberate composure to carry off such a classical, ornate aesthetic. Every time I looked down to arrange the skirt or turned a page of the book, I felt encased in an exquisite sense of restraint, which happened to be the crucial key to shaping the character's Doll style state of being.
For props, I prepared a brown-covered vintage book to anchor my poses. The character of Alice Margatroid inherently revolves around manipulating dolls, so during the shoot I placed special emphasis on controlling body language. Hand movements could not be casual; whether resting my chin on my hand or holding the book, I had to hold back force, maintaining a poised texture that felt subtly stiff yet graceful. To match the theme of 'chanting,' my gaze could not be too lively; my eyes had to drift softly across the pages, evoking the illusion of a soul gently detached from its physical vessel. The white teacup arranged beside me and the tiny doll sticker accents added in post-production all served to enrich the narrative depth of the frame.
Studio lighting favored gentle natural side-lighting, paired with a dark navy leather sofa backdrop that beautifully accentuated the white lace textures of the Lace dress and the luminous sheen of my skin. The deep-toned background also formed a sharp visual contrast with the white attire and subject. To ensure facial makeup aligned faithfully with the character, the base was kept sheer and dewy, with eyeliner subtly extended and paired with faintly melancholy contact lenses, striving to convey an otherworldly, cool detachment and quiet poise before the lens.
Bringing a 2D anime character into the 3D realm means costumes and props are merely the foundation; the ultimate crux lies in understanding and projecting the character's soul. Being able to achieve these satisfying results was thanks to Lady Zhinu @-竹中玉子-, who provided invaluable guidance throughout the shoot and post-processing, from capturing light and shadow to mastering composition, perfectly realizing the vision I held in my mind.
From initial fittings to taking off makeup, although navigating an intricate Lace dress was physically cumbersome, seeing the finished imagery emerge on camera made every meticulous effort worthwhile. I have always believed cosplay is not merely putting on clothes for photos, but a secondary interpretation of the character—using one's body and demeanor to recreate a fleeting, beautiful dream. Through this Alice cosplay, I hope everyone can feel that quiet, subtly detached Doll style allure.
