[La Pluma Cosplay] Arknights: Outdoor Compositing in the Dossoles Ruins

While shooting in the outdoor area of the Shenzhen Ring Expo, I ended up making a composited photo based on the on-site weather. For this late-May convention organized by Ring Universe Anime & Game Carnival, I happened to bring this gear for some test shots outside. When reviewing the raw files later, I realized that the low-hanging clouds on-site combined with the abandoned concrete structures next to me were the perfect natural base for ruins style photography and compositing.

Since I was already there, I decided to take full advantage of the location's outdoor benefits. The costume design leans heavily toward a tactical, techwear style. The upper body features a sleeveless spliced tactical vest with a grey, black, and green color-blocking scheme. There are plenty of pockets and webbing strap details around the waist and shoulders, giving it a strong techwear aesthetic. The lower body consists of a black short skirt paired with multiple tactical straps around the right thigh, keeping the silhouette clean and agile for easy movement. The matching half-finger gloves on my hands are also highly practical, making it very easy to hold props or adjust weapon angles.

Speaking of the props, that massive curved-blade scythe is exceptionally eye-catching and holds quite a bit of weight. When searching for camera angles outside, walking onto those abandoned heaps of rubble with it really helped me immerse myself in the character's battle state. The broken concrete walls, tilted traffic light poles, and overgrown weeds and gravel on the ground already set the perfect scene. However, the weather that day was quite overcast with thick clouds and scattered light, making the raw sky look flat and grey, while the figure lacked depth under the natural lighting.

Thus, during post-processing, I decided to turn it into a composited piece. First, I performed extensive sky replacement and adjustments, swapping the flat clouds for more oppressive storm clouds and dark rainclouds, while preserving a hint of faint light where the clouds parted to create a striking contrast. I adjusted the lighting on the character accordingly so her texture wouldn't look disconnected from the background. I slightly enhanced the shadow details of the weeds and stone blocks in the foreground of the ruins, making them look sharper to increase the depth of field and visual edge of the frame.

This shoot also gave me a deeper understanding of the classic Dossoles theme from Arknights. The character's setting requires her to traverse through these complex, war-torn environments. Therefore, I intentionally chose a low-angle shot looking up for the composition, which not only bolstered the character's presence but also created a powerful sense of oppression between the ruins in the background and the vast sky. With her scythe tilted diagonally downward and her left arm slightly raised, her body posture projects an effortless composure, beautifully fitting the character's combat personality.

This Shenzhen expo experience was highly unique. Shooting outdoors actually tests the photographer's adaptability far more than indoors. Without perfect studio lighting or an absolutely clean environment, we fully utilized the on-site industrial ruins elements, wild weeds, and that cracked concrete block. The process of convention photo compositing isn't about covering up flaws from the shoot, but rather elevating the emotion and atmosphere of the scene based on existing assets to give the final photo a stronger narrative.

In truth, the hardest part of outdoor convention photo compositing is maintaining lighting consistency. Since the new sky assets and the lighting angle of the raw photo might not match perfectly, we had to repeatedly align the light source directions in post-processing. This time, I focused on retaining rim lighting along the character's edges and deepening the shadows to ensure she looks completely integrated into this fictional ruins setting. I lowered the overall color saturation, emphasizing cool greys and cyans while preserving a touch of warmth in the skin tones and parts of her outfit to naturally draw the eye to the figure.
