[Tamamo no Mae cosplay] Phantom of the Fox Maiden at the New Lotus ACG Expo

For this set of convention photos taken at the New Lotus ACG Expo on August 3rd, the cool ambient lighting suited the costume's texture remarkably well, though it posed quite a challenge for photography. After meeting up with photographer Tie Niu in the morning, we immediately scouted a relatively clean angle on the convention floor to start shooting.

Due to the character's design, the outfit features numerous intricate gold straps and metal rings, paired with a glossy black bodice that is highly sensitive to light reflections. Throughout the shoot, the greatest difficulty lay in maintaining bodily grace and softness beneath these rigid structural details. With every pose, I had to ensure the golden straps didn't dig into my skin or create awkward creases, all while keeping my breathing steady—something that takes practical experience to master. The blue ruffled sleeves were also prone to shifting out of place, and Tie Niu continuously helped adjust their drape so they wouldn't block my face or make my shoulders appear overly broad.

Turning to the legwear and shoe styling: to give the character a more commanding presence, I chose over-the-knee black stockings paired with chunky-heeled platform boots adorned with metal buckles. Thigh-high stockings snag easily in crowded convention halls, requiring immense caution when walking or crouching. The front-facing kneeling pose where I pulled on both sleeves was particularly memorable—the hard tile floor made my knees ache the moment I knelt down, but this angle was essential to flatter my leg lines and proportions. These postures demanded continuous tension in the leg muscles to keep the contours taut, which, combined with the visual effect of the stockings, elongated my silhouette nicely. The heel height was also well-balanced, keeping fatigue manageable while preserving the graceful drape of the skirt.

The talisman prop in hand was carefully prepared with crisp, firm edges to accommodate tricky camera angles. Using the talisman to partially conceal half my face or cover my forehead created distinct moods, enhancing an enigmatic, mysterious ambiance.

The convention background was quite busy with passing attendees and flashlights from other photographers, meaning we constantly had to wait for clear intervals before clicking the shutter. Several times, right after settling into a pose, someone walked into the frame, forcing a complete retake—it was truly an arduous shoot. Tie Niu demonstrated great light control, utilizing high-powered strobe flashes to overpower the cluttered ambient light, ensuring the subject popped cleanly against the cool blue background with striking contrast.

The most taxing aspect of the look was the physical weight of the accessories. The mini top hat was pinned onto the wig with clips, causing scalp soreness over time. Furthermore, managing the long hair alongside animal ears and a voluminous tail required constant repositioning to avoid crushing the fur trims, demanding vigilance from both myself and the photographer. For the side-reclining pose, my body had to maintain a relaxed yet engaged tension—neither too stiff nor overly slouched—achieving a delicate balance of languid poise.

Writing all this is really to document the energy and dedication of that day's shoot. The key to portraying this character lies in capturing that mysterious, captivating gaze. The deliberately deepened eyeliner and eyeshadow translated beautifully on camera, harmonizing with the long pink curls to create a cohesive palette. Although the process was tiring, seeing the raw frames radiate such cool-toned visual impact made it clear our team coordination was spot on.
