For this Ai Hayasaka cosplay shoot, we chose a location in front of a white wall graced with rich tree shadows. The sunlight that day was wonderful; rays filtered through leaves onto the wall, forming a gorgeous dappled effect. To make the character look more casual and effortless, I paired a white button-down shirt with a sleeveless black vest, tying a light orange jacket around my waist for extra color layering, accompanied by black knee-high socks and a pair of vintage leather shoes on the lower half. The wig featured classic blonde twin tails with blue scrunchies, detailed with blue nail polish, seamlessly capturing the High school girl Campus style vibe.
The shooting gear was a Sony A7C2 paired with a 28-75mm G2 lens, a focal range that proved remarkably versatile in this setting. In the first shot, the photographer had me turn sideways to look back with one leg lifted, letting the blue handbag drape naturally from my hand. This pose was actually quite a test for core balance, but in the final image, the curve of the skirt and the elongated lines of the Black stockings turned out beautifully. The sunlight was intense at the time, so I kept my face mostly front-lit or with side fill to avoid overexposure.
The second shot, crouching halfway while adjusting glasses, is a moment I personally love. Since Ai Hayasaka naturally has many different personas, putting on black-rimmed glasses added a touch of maturity and calm composure. The ground had a smooth finish, casting crisp shadows against the wall. Holding the glasses with one hand while letting the other hand drape down naturally, the blue polish on my fingertips resonated nicely with the outfit. The photographer utilized the wall and surrounding space to give the composition a feeling of extension, with the blue shoulder bag beside me serving as an element balancing the frame.
The third shot is a close-up, where the wide aperture smoothly blurred the leaves behind into textured bokeh spots. With fingers interlaced across my chest, I leaned forward, gazing into the lens. This perspective places high demands on eye contact and micro-expressions, needing to convey that calm exterior masking a sharp, perceptive mind. To ensure crisp catchlights in the eyes, the photographer continuously adjusted the angle between the reflector and natural sunlight. A gentle breeze drifted by now and then, adding unexpected vitality as stray strands of the wig fluttered.
The entire shoot felt very much like an authentic everyday chronicle. Keeping in mind recent photography contests and video incentive campaigns, we wanted to capture narrative-rich images using grounded, everyday settings. Without complex lighting rigs, we relied entirely on natural sunlight and ambient reflections. For a High school girl themed cosplay, how to wear a ubiquitous uniform with personal style while blending character traits into tangible light and shadow was a question I constantly contemplated during this shoot. The compression from the telephoto end and the environmental context from 28mm gave this photo series dynamic versatility in framing. Every lifted leg, crouch, and even interlaced finger posture was the result of repeated micro-adjustments in front of the lens. Without over-processing skin textures, preserving the authentic lighting and natural colors of the day left me thoroughly satisfied with the overall atmosphere of this series.
