This set of convention photos for Futaba Sakura cosplay was captured during the Shenzhen Clear Sky Comic Con. The reason for choosing this outdoor location was straightforward: the sleek lines of modern architecture and the reflections across glass curtain walls were an ideal match for the urban techwear aesthetic of Persona and Persona 5 Royal. To work with the intense outdoor daylight, we relied extensively on wide apertures and backlighting, allowing highlights to bloom gently to create a crisp, luminous anime palette.
For the wardrobe, to faithfully recreate the character's unique blend of schoolgirl charm and geek culture, I chose a structured black blazer adorned with the specific emblem on the chest. The bold red buttons stood out distinctly against the dark fabric, layered over a white dress shirt and black ribbon tie—visual layering was paramount. The lower half was styled with a red, black, and white plaid mini-skirt paired with over-the-knee Black stockings. Chunky platform oxfords were crucial for elongating leg lines, though they carried notable physical weight. The black over-ear headphones and round black-rimmed glasses were the defining soul accessories. During shooting, glasses easily catch harsh glare, requiring constant recalibration of my facial angle and the light source so the frames retained clear presence without obscuring the gaze. The long, straight orange wig with its signature ahoge strand took substantial prep time, sculpted with styling wax to ensure it retained its clean silhouette even in gusty outdoor breezes.
In posing choreography, to channel the character's quirky, playful nature, we explored numerous dynamic gestures. The squatting pose tested core strength the most—keeping the back upright while extending leg lines toward the lens, all while remaining mindful of wardrobe coverage. As seen in Photo 1, squatting with a slight three-quarter body turn while gazing straight into the camera paired with the sleek drape of the Black stockings elongated visual proportions beautifully. When holding the red-and-black calling card prop, I experimented with pinching it beside my cheek or thrusting it forward, combined with one hand propped on my hip to heighten narrative tension and defiance.
The fast-paced tempo of convention shooting was definitely a physical workout. Running around outdoor locations carrying the black messenger bag, the acrylic keychains swung continuously. The dynamic snapshot of balancing on one leg while kicking the other back took several attempts to nail the center of gravity—leaping lightly while maintaining an effortless, relaxed facial expression. The photographer possessed impeccable timing, using a wide aperture in natural light to melt the background into soft blur, locking focus firmly onto my head and eyes while turning surrounding greenery and architecture into creamy pastel color blocks.
Reviewing these convention photos, I closely observed the delicate transitions of light and shadow across fabric folds and hair strands. The most captivating aspect of outdoor photography is unpredictable sunlight, which often gifts the frame with unexpected texture. From scouting and wardrobe styling to posing execution, every step required proactive planning, yet on set we had to adapt flexibly to shifting light. This represents a quintessential convention photo log: free of rigid, overly staged poses, focusing instead on swiftly capturing the living essence of the character amidst a tight schedule.
