Today at ChinaJoy 2025, I shot a set of convention photos featuring a tactical catgirl aesthetic. I spent quite some time prepping this gear, with the core vision being a fusion of two completely opposing elements: soft, sweet catgirl vibes and rugged, hardcore tactics. On my head are classic black-and-white cat ears paired with gaming headphones; for the outfit, I wore a black sleeveless zippered base layer under a tactical vest patched with 'RECON TEAM' Velcro insignias. The lower half features tactical shorts, over-the-knee black stockings, and chunky tactical boots, rounded out with knee pads, elbow pads, and fingerless tactical gloves, taking functional techwear to the max.
To give the images compelling visual tension, I made thoughtful styling choices. Because the tactical vest itself is quite structured and rigid, I opted for a form-fitting inner layer, using shorts combined with black stockings to retain feminine silhouettes amidst the rugged gear. The prop knife in my hand served as the defining touch—gripping it instantly channeled the sharp poise of a cool reconnaissance operative.
The gear used was a Nikon Z50 II paired with the 18-140mm lens. This focal range is remarkably versatile on a convention floor, allowing smooth transitions between full-body framing and close-ups. Convention hall lighting can be chaotic, yet the final frames preserved wonderful subject lighting and pleasing background bokeh. Movement-wise, I strove to showcase the gear's distinct features—adjusting the headset, wielding the knife, hands on hips, or leaning against crowd-control barriers. These natural, cool gestures felt much more organic than forced posing.
Laser lights and booth backdrops throughout the venue enhanced the cyber-tactical ambiance. Capturing the dynamic synergy of over-the-knee socks, chunky boots, leg lines, and harness straps in motion was quite a test for the camera. Walking through the shoot wearing full armor and thick-soled boots was admittedly tiring, but seeing the contrast between the matte metallic textures of the gear and the sheer finish of the stockings made every ounce of effort worthwhile.
Suiting up in tactical gear is admittedly intricate, particularly strapping the elbow and knee pads securely so they won't slip during movement while still allowing comfortable joint flex. Fingerless gloves offer great dexterity, though keeping a firm, non-slip grip on the knife handle still takes focus. Stacking cat ears alongside over-ear headphones required careful angle adjustments so they wouldn't look awkward. Amidst the dense convention crowds, I sought out booth perimeters and black stanchion barriers to keep compositions clean, using venue neon signs as backlighting to enrich depth.
For facial expression, I deliberately restrained overly bubbly smiles, leaning instead into calm, concentrated focus. Paired with reddish makeup and an under-eye beauty mark, it accentuated that sharp, sweet duality. Tactical style relies heavily on material textures—the woven grain of nylon vests, the sheen of leather guards, and the subtle luster of stockings under spotlights all elevate the final polish.
All in all, this tactical catgirl experiment was a great success. Although it was my first time rocking such heavy gear at a convention, the setting and illumination aligned unexpectedly well. That's the beauty of conventions: witnessing the creative collision of diverse aesthetics, and I'm deeply grateful to have these electric, dynamic moments captured on camera.
