Preparing for this Drunken in the Shade of Flowers shoot took considerable thought and effort. The outfit was centered on a dark green palette paired with a vibrant yellow sash, creating a striking visual contrast. The top features a tube-top design detailed with gold embroidery and beaded strands, layered beneath a sheer, whisper-thin chiffon robe. To complement the attire, I chose an intricate openwork silver crown featuring vine and leaf motifs with delicate extensions along both sides. For the makeup, I wore green contact lenses to echo the garments, extended the eyeliner outward, and added small green decorative markings beneath the eyes.
The set was arranged against a pure white background accented by openwork wooden folding screens and ornamental Taihu scholar stones. Key props included a translucent paper umbrella, a writing desk, artificial rocks, and pastel pink and blue floral arrangements. The lighting was kept soft and high-key, lending a luminous translucence to the silhouette while beautifully highlighting the sheer fabric's light-filtering qualities.
Throughout the session, we captured a mix of seated, standing, and close-up gesture shots. While sitting sideways on the low wooden daybed and glancing back, the photographer lit the scene from the side to emphasize the waist chains and necklace, making the metallic sheen and gemstone facets pop distinctly. When posing standing with the paper umbrella, I shifted my weight onto the back leg and gently extended the front leg to showcase the skirt's high slit and flow, waiting for the breeze to sweep the chiffon and ribbons into graceful arcs. Close-ups focused on interwoven fingers resting near the chest, cleanly capturing the neckline embroidery and shoulder contours. The layered metal waist chains and gemstone accessories brought remarkable depth on camera; though keeping them untangled during poses required mindfulness, the final look was breathtaking.
For a classical look infused with fantasy flair, the greatest risk is rigid movement. I focused on staying relaxed, keeping wrists softly curved and directing my gaze with a calm, aloof focus slightly past the lens rather than staring directly into it. The lightweight fabric moved naturally when walking or turning, so flowing into the garment's natural momentum yielded much more evocative captures than stiff, deliberate posing.
The entire shoot progressed seamlessly with great synergy on styling and lighting adjustments. Pairing the green chiffon with silver accents against a clean white backdrop with traditional elements gave the images immense poise. We didn't need to force emotion—the play of light over embroidered threads and metal jewelry carried natural narrative depth. Taking off the somewhat weighty crown at home, reviewing the final photos made every adjustment and late-night prep deeply satisfying.
