When shooting this Ellen Joe Zenless Zone Zero cosplay photoshoot, the photographer Lin Zai and I shared a great mutual understanding to discard that intentionally rigid studio-shooting style, and instead tried to blend the character's casual, slightly rebellious languidness into a real everyday scene. So, we directly used the desks in a classroom as our main backdrop.
Deciding to use this outfit of a white shirt and a dark blue pleated skirt was because it could beautifully capture the essence of Ellen Joe's student temperament, while subtly revealing the character's cool sharpness and small personality through the black stockings and red-highlighted hair ends. To better coordinate with this lazy and casual state, I specially prepared a lollipop as a prop. This tiny touch indeed made the frame instantly much more vivid, adding less seriousness and more of a scattered, unbothered feeling of not wanting to leave after school.
During the shooting process, the hardest part to grasp was actually the facial expression—presenting that subtle balance of not caring too much about the surroundings but not being completely indifferent either. Lin Zai was highly professional during his guidance; he had me relax my body, place my full center of gravity on the desk, let my eyelids droop slightly, and avoid intentionally pleasing the lens, but instead imagine a leisurely summer afternoon spent alone in the classroom. Under this kind of guidance, the gaze in the photos ended up even more captivating, perfectly fitting Ellen Joe's slightly tsundere character background.
The ambient lighting was actually very everyday, without using highly exaggerated lights to build up an atmosphere. Instead, we utilized the existing natural light in the classroom, giving the entire set of photos a strong sense of reality and a slice-of-life breath. This final photo everyone sees is actually a frozen frame after our multiple attempts; the posture of holding the lollipop in hand was done casually, but the lens capture was exceptionally precise. Details like the black choker and hair accessories did not overpower the subject in the frame, but blended very naturally with the overall black hair tone.
Although this looks like a simple set of campus style photography, a lot of thought went into selecting the hair color, outfit, and accessories early on to make every detail stay as close to the character as possible. It must be said that Lin Zai's composition is highly creative; he chose a high-angle shot to combine the character's body language with the lines of the desks and chairs, displaying the style of a languid portrait just right. After finishing this photoshoot, I really love the looseness conveyed in the photos. Doing roleplay in an everyday scene often allows a character to step from the 2D world into real life, an experience that is very rare when participating in cosplay photography. I hope this set of photos allows everyone to see Ellen Joe in another parallel universe, looking cool as always despite appearing nonchalant.
