[Yakumo Yukari cosplay] Touhou Project Purple dress photo set: Light and Shadow Sharing at Shamian

This photoshoot was completed at Shamian, mainly aiming to capture the elusive texture of Yakumo Yukari in Touhou Project as she wanders between gaps. Special thanks to Master Ayu for the shoot; not only did he capture the light and shadow wonderfully, but the composition also suited my styling and makeup perfectly. In terms of costume, this purple, black, and pink color-blocked dress actually featured abundant details. The jacquard fabric in purple offered great reflectivity under strong outdoor light, while the pink lace trims flatteringly structured the skirt hem. The combination of Stocking outfit and strappy high heels on the thighs also underwent many angle adjustments during shooting to ensure the leg lines looked more natural. The folding fan and lace parasol served as the core props for this styling; shooting with the parasol opened versus closed conveyed completely distinct moods. Under the bright daytime sun, the hard light cast upon the purple dress created rich depth, so the first photo chose a high-contrast angle between light and shadow to accentuate the character's mystique. The raw photos turned out so well that almost no heavy post-processing was needed, mainly fine-tuning the skirt's texture.

During the shoot, the photographer guided me among various historic buildings in Shamian; elements like iron gates, red brick walls, and European-style pillars greatly helped convey the character's classical elegance. The most enjoyable part was chasing the light—because sunlight shifted rapidly, capturing dynamic moments like turning around with the parasol required freezing the fluid motion of the skirt hem and hair. The texture of black stockings displayed two totally different expressions under backlighting versus front lighting; after many attempts, front-lit highlights proved far more suitable for showcasing the outfit's luxurious feel. The wig this time was naturally very curly and required considerable effort to style; paired with red bows and pink-and-white headwear, it added great richness to the overall atmosphere. The original intent behind releasing this Purple dress photo set was to convey the character's everyday presence through on-location Shamian street photography. Shooting on streets filled with European architecture in Shamian naturally aligned with the character's lore. What the camera captured was not just a costume, but a state of being. After a lengthy shoot, I selected a few satisfying photos, hoping everyone can feel that quiet yet enigmatic aura while viewing them.

Compared to synthetic post-composite editing, the authenticity brought by on-location practical shoots in this style is irreplaceable. To emphasize the layering of the dress, standing angles before railings and iron gates required repetitive tuning. Although the high heels were quite tall, I kept them on throughout to perfectly match the dress length. Because this was a dedicated photo set focusing heavily on texture and atmosphere, much time was spent waiting for the ideal light. Though tiring, the final result was deeply satisfying. The wind was noticeable on the day of the shoot, making the fluttering skirt hem look all the more vivid and organic. This Shamian street photography experience was thoroughly enjoyable, giving me a deeper appreciation of this Touhou Project character. Refining adjustments during shoots also enriched my takeaways on vintage Western dress photography, particularly handling textural nuances of silk, lace, and Stocking outfit fabrics under changing light.
