Portraying Kaworu Nagisa, preparing the makeup and styling for this Neon Genesis Evangelion look took considerable effort. Since the character concept features a White shirt, purple undershirt, and black trousers paired with a silver-white wig, the overall color palette is exceptionally clean. To match the character's demeanor, I chose the beach for this Seaside location shoot. During the shoot, we specifically chose the late afternoon near sunset; the backlit illumination at that golden hour was fantastic, producing a soft atmosphere that resonated deeply with the tranquil serenity of Kaworu Nagisa.
We brought two props for this shoot: a violin and a bouquet of white roses. Posing with the violin was quite challenging, as holding the bow in a realistic playing posture while ensuring visual elegance required studying violin holding techniques and angles for a long time. The shots holding the white roses were chosen because white roses complement Kaworu so well, looking pure and ethereal, and bowing my head allowed the light and shadow to cast beautifully over my hair.
For the styling and makeup, I spent a lot of time selecting the inner purple shirt, and pairing it with a looser outer White shirt and short wig delivered that cool, aloof Silver-haired boy aesthetic. During the shoot, the photographer guided several compositions, using a wide aperture to blur the urban skyline in the background, making the subject stand out. The combination of city architecture in the distance and sparkling bokeh on the water's surface under backlighting perfectly accentuated that solitary yet gentle feeling.
This shooting experience brought me many valuable takeaways, especially gaining insights into posing with wigs and props. Spending a long time styling the hair to achieve that natural, tousled look paid off with great results. This photo set mainly recreated the character's quiet listening demeanor and yearning for nature. Without exaggerated body movements, the character's personality was conveyed entirely through the gaze and subtle tilts of the head. Controlling the angle toward the lens was crucial, and I tried various profile and back angles. Shooting against the sunset and sea breeze made getting into character much faster. The shirt features a turn-down collar and looser cuffs, gracefully displaying movements.
This shoot gave me ample inspiration for portraying this character or similar ones in the future. Although crossplaying a male character requires softening female facial features, reshaping bone structures through makeup, paired with the wig and the evocative setting, gave the final photos strong emotional resonance. For the White shirt, I deliberately chose a stiffer fabric so it wouldn't cling too tightly. For the violin shots, to make the instrument angle look professional, I reviewed violin posture tutorial videos in advance. The sea breeze was strong, easily messing up the hair, so multiple layers of hairspray were applied to maintain the fluffy yet textured look. In color grading, we adopted warm orange and white tones, matching the evening sea and city skyline. Overall, this Kaworu Nagisa cosplay styling was a delightful challenge. As we took the final shots, the sun set completely; rushing to capture that fading light made all our hurried shutter clicks worthwhile, resulting in deeply satisfying quality.
