Putting on this outfit, sitting on the wooden chair of the café, and smoothing out the long orange hair, this set of Momoka Hanyuu cosplay from Arknights formally entered the shooting state. I have always loved the design elements of this character, and today I finally had the chance to restore the details from the settings one by one into reality.
The large brown bow on the head is the visual focus, like a cute little hat that comes with its own adorable touch. Combined with this orange-toned wig, the colors are very vibrant. The wig trimming underwent quite a lot of layering treatments, contouring the face shape while making the hair tips look a bit agile. For the eye makeup, I specially chose light-colored contacts, paired with relatively soft eyeshadow, smoothing out the focus of the entire face. The lip makeup uses a natural milk-tea shade application; since the clothing itself is rich in color, the facial makeup shouldn't be too heavy to avoid hijacking the visual center of gravity of the styling.
The clothing design is very crisp, with a red-and-black plaid tube top combined with a white ruffled shirt collar inner wear, carrying a British vintage flavor. The black bow embellishing the neckline adds a well-behaved sense, while the large red bow on the chest is the core decoration of the styling, making it highly eye-catching. The lower body selected black ruffled shorts, which can make the leg shape look very slender when sitting down for photography. This brown striped jacket draped over the shoulders is actually very crucial; it breaks the tightness of the upper garment, injecting an extra touch of lazy and casual atmosphere.
During the shooting process, the golden chain at the waist and the bow on the chest would occasionally interfere with each other, requiring the assistant to help me tidy up their positions from time to time. The small crossbody bag also has a quite stylized design, matching the vintage color tone of the entire outfit perfectly. The atmosphere of this café in the background is also particularly good, with the blue-gray striped wallpaper on the wall looking very fresh. On the table are blue-and-white porcelain teacups and dining trays, and a glass tank with little goldfish swimming inside is placed behind. I especially love that fish tank; watching the fish swim back and forth during shooting intervals makes me feel entirely relaxed.
The photographer asked me to try different hand movements and sitting postures, such as holding a teacup or resting on the back of the chair. Because we were shooting a character with vibrant colors and a sense of dynamics, my expression wasn't deliberately stiff, but rather tried its best to maintain a natural, slightly nimble demeanor. In terms of light utilization, the natural light filtering from outside the window was very soft, beautifully rendering the color of the wig.
This process of capturing a sense of character in a lifestyle-oriented scene is very interesting. Compared to a pure photography studio, the real items in the environment, such as the texture of the wooden table, the small paintings on the wall, and the floral stickers on the window, all add an un-replicable unique life aura to the final cuts. Bringing a character from the settings into such an environment feels wondrous; though it looks like relaxing in daily life, every detail tells others that this is a serious restoration. This makes it a great practice of Café photography.
Regarding accessory pairing, the silver chain and the slanted brown bag strap visually enrich the details of the entire outfit. When sitting down to shoot, it's necessary to keep the waist and abdomen straight so that the plaid upper garment won't show ugly wrinkles, while beautifully showcasing the waist-cinching effect. The wig's bangs need to be casually brushed aside with hands from time to time to avoid blocking the light effect of the contact lenses.
When editing the pictures later, I tried my best to lean toward texture, restoring the indoor light and shadow on site carrying afternoon laziness. The focus of this style of photography is the fusion of person and environment, without requiring excessive skin smoothing; preserving a bit of skin texture and the material touch of clothes looks better. Every time I try a new character, I always have some new gains, especially with this kind of daily-vibe outfit, shooting photos outdoors is truly comfortable. After putting on this outfit, I feel my whole self infected by the character's vitality. Being able to seriously complete a restoration makes me highly fulfilled. It's a wonderful journey of 2D cosplay.
