The Convention photos from Jinling Day 1 are finally retouched! This time, I teamed up with my partner @AaaXiaolin to bring a duo cosplay from Magical Girl Witch Trials featuring Emma cosplay and Hiro cosplay. From initial planning to on-site shooting, our prep window was quite tight, but we were very pleased with the final outcome. Today, I'd like to share a detailed breakdown of our hair, makeup, and convention shooting experience.
First, regarding my Emma styling: the wig used a silver-white base with soft pink gradient tips. To minimize frizz, I soaked it in warm water with conditioner the night before, straightened it strand by strand with a flat iron after blow-drying, and generously applied hairspray on-site. For the hat, beyond the black base, the large white flower on the side and the black bobby pins were attached by hand, reinforced with hidden stitches to ensure they wouldn't fall off during high-intensity walking across the convention halls. For makeup, matching the pink colored contacts, the eye shadow featured a broad dusting of pinkish-brown with delicate shimmer, alongside pronounced blush so it would stay vibrant under the harsh overhead convention lighting. The costume is a black-and-white sailor-collar cut, accented by a white bow tie pinned with a circular badge adorned with pink gems, offering rich visual detail.
Next, about my partner Xiaolin's Hiro cosplay: her styling embraced a dark gothic vibe, featuring long straight black hair with blunt bangs, with red contact lenses that instantly locked in an imposing presence. Her headpiece was remarkably intricate, layering red ribbons, white pearl strands, black fan-shaped lace, and a slender hairpin. She spent immense effort securing these ornaments with numerous bobby pins and styling wax. The dark coat layered over the white shirt cuffs, while the red necktie with criss-cross patterns and dangling fine gold chains served as the crowning touch—not only adding metallic texture, but also dividing the chest color blocks cleanly. Standing together—one white and one black, one pink and one red—the chromatic contrast photographed brilliantly.
The convention floor was crowded with busy backgrounds. To get clean shots, we found a relatively smooth wall surface, pairing vignetting with the photographer's on-camera flash. For natural-light shots, being mindful of facial shadows is essential, making a small handheld reflector or portable fill light indispensable. Since our costumes did not feature stocking elements, our visual focus rested entirely on upper-body details and expressive interaction. When framing intimate duo poses, shooting from a slightly lower angle captures both headpieces and collar lines in their entirety.
For post-processing, I avoided heavy skin-smoothing to preserve authentic skin texture, primarily unifying color tones and slightly muting the saturation of pink, red, black, and white to prevent harsh glare. From morning entry to afternoon wrap-up, convention days are physically demanding, yet the synergy with my partner made most poses succeed in a single take. Starting with this duo portrait today, I will polish the remaining Convention photos gradually, and I hope everyone enjoys this presentation!
