Shooting Takanashi Rikka's Rose gown this time, the overall tone was anchored in a dark Gothic Lolita style. The garment's design is exceptionally rich in visual layers: the primary palette is black and purple accented with red, where the red underbust corset and rose embellishments at the chest serve as the visual focal point, topped by a black choker collar embedded with a red gem. To match this look, I wore a purple wig alongside her signature floral-gem eyepatch. For makeup, a deeper, brooding color palette was applied to the eyes against an alabaster porcelain base, creating a striking contrast with the black opera gloves and the white bandages bound around my forearm.
The shooting took place in a vintage studio in Dongguan. The set was meticulously arranged to embody a retro gothic mood, with a deep red tufted velvet sofa forming the centerpiece of the frame, accented by golden tasseled throw pillows. Gilded birdcages, climbing red roses, a vintage gramophone, and golden candelabras dressed the background. Such an environment naturally carries storytelling depth. The photographer was deliberate with the lighting design: warm amber illumination fell across golden satin fabrics and wooden flooring, creating a mood-rich contrast of warm and cool tones against the black-and-purple gown.
For the lower half of the ensemble, the skirt features multi-tiered black draping lined with purple and pale blue ruffles. On the legs, black diamond-patterned fishnet tights (Black stockings) were paired with patent leather Mary Janes detailed with metallic buckles. The black hosiery sculpted the leg lines beautifully, becoming one of the most compelling highlights of this look. Throughout the session, we explored numerous poses. The second photo captures a classic seated pose on the sofa with crossed legs, clearly displaying the tiered drapery of the skirt and the diamond-knit mesh details. The fifth photo introduces more kinetic energy: perching on the sofa edge with one leg raised simultaneously showcases the full silhouette of the dress while drawing visual focus to the leg lines; paired with the black parasol in hand, it exudes intense compositional tension.
Photos 3 and 4 are also among my favorite angles. Photo 3 sits on the floor with legs extended, leaning back against the sofa for an effortless, languid mood. Photo 4 presents a medium close-up, fingers gently grazing the cheek, eyes locking onto the lens, with natural arm placement channeling the character's internal emotion. Leveraging props is paramount in Cosplay photography—items like red roses, walking sticks, and parasols help the model slip into character much faster.
The entire shoot was quite an endurance test. Because the sofa was soft, it was easy to sink in; maintaining an upright spine and graceful posture required constant core engagement. Furthermore, the long gloves and leg strapping demanded close attention during pose transitions to avoid awkward bunching. With every setup, the photographer adjusted tiny nuances, checking everything from the curve of the wig to the spread of the skirt hem. Despite the physical strain, seeing the light, shadow, and tactile textures of the costume meld together seamlessly made every effort worthwhile. I am utterly in love with this Rose gown look.
