[Reimu Hakurei Cosplay] Touhou Project: Yozakura and White Plum Blossoms at Luogang Xiangxue Park, Perfectly Recreating Hana Reimu

We have received the final edited photos from this shoot! Choosing Luogang Xiangxue Park as our location was because it offered both Yozakura (night cherry blossoms) and white plum blossom scenery at the time, perfectly harmonizing with the red-and-white shrine maiden palette of Reimu Hakurei from Touhou Project.

The shoot took place on a late March evening under dim light and chilly temperatures. The outfit is a red-and-white color scheme; the top features a red base with white lace design, accompanied by long detached sleeves that catch the wind easily—ideal for conveying dynamic motion. The oversized red bow on the head and the long ribbons cascading down the hair are highly recognizable elements of this styling, exhibiting rich texture under backlighting. The skirt was structured with a petticoat beneath, maintaining a flawless bell shape without collapsing during twirls. The footwear paired buckled black leather shoes with white ankle socks, balancing the color composition when glimpsed in mid-spin.

The first dynamic action pose (Photo 4) was tested many times. Causing the skirt hem to flare up without obstructing my face while maintaining natural poise required the photographer to trigger the shutter at the exact right instant. For that motion, I kept my head as steady as possible while gripping the ground firmly with my footing to produce a still frame rich in visual tension.

Photo 2, sitting on the tree, was taken during a break. The bark was rough, and worrying about snagging the dress on branches made the pose rather uncomfortable, yet the resulting closed-eye composure turned out serene. The close-up in Photo 3 holding a flower petal in my mouth was tailored to complement the gentle persona of Hana Reimu.

We faced quite a few challenges during shooting. Night photography relies heavily on lighting; the photographer deployed a combination of continuous video lights and flashes, turning background ambient lights into soft circular bokeh under wide apertures. Combined with post-processed falling petal effects, it lent incredible atmosphere to the scenes. Night illumination must balance facial brightness with background depth—excessive light looks artificial, while underexposure obscures detail. Additionally, dry straw littered the ground, making sitting down quite prickly through the skirt.

The overall shoot was physically exhausting due to hunting for angles in the dark, maneuvering in a voluminous skirt, and braving freezing midnight winds. Seeing the final results, however, made every bit of hardship worthwhile. Huge thanks to photographer and retoucher Manman R for mastering the light and shadow to bring this 2D vision to life.
