At the event, I was suddenly roped into shooting a 10-second Eye contact challenge. Because the eye color design was vibrant and the wig was particularly eye-catching, the on-site photographer suggested trying an intense eye contact feel once the camera zoomed in, and that is how this set of photos was born.
For makeup and styling, the emphasis was heavily placed on the eyes. To make the blue pupils appear translucent like glass beads, circle lenses with a darker outer rim were used to enhance depth. The undereye blush was applied generously and paired with a reddish lip tint; while this kind of makeup easily washes out under natural daylight, on-site at the outdoor area of Firefly ACG Expo—where large patches of lush greenery served as the backdrop—framing that brought the face into sharp focus became the main priority.
I incorporated plenty of subtle touches into the outfit: a white oversized ruffled headpiece accented with a blue cross, a double-layered pearl necklace, and sheer ruffled cuffs on the gloves, all of which added up to a delicate, refined aesthetic. The white fabric of the dress body harmonized nicely with the gold buttons and blue ribbons, delivering great texture. Stepping outside in a sleeveless white dress in the summer was refreshingly cool and breezy to walk around in without feeling stifling.
Regarding the photography, the convention floor was crowded that day. To prevent the background from appearing cluttered, the photographer opted for a wide aperture, neatly blurring out the passing crowds and green trees behind me to emphasize the subject. In terms of poses, classic conventions moves like finger hearts, chin cupping, and saluting are staples—never feel like these poses are overly rigid, because in a bustling venue, muscle memory tells you how to snap into your most photogenic angles fastest.
Once the photos were ready, many people commented that they carried an undeniable idol presence. Personally, I feel that dressing in this aesthetic is far more than just wearing a costume; it requires immersing yourself into that bubbly, lively ambiance. Throughout the shoot, I focused on maintaining a confident smile, keeping my gaze locked onto the lens so the final photos could project true visual resonance.
Receiving the initial convention photos was such a pleasant surprise, as the lighting, color harmony, and styling came together seamlessly. Visiting Firefly ACG Expo also let me connect with many peers who love this style. We exchanged tips on capturing eye close-ups—such as briefly holding your breath right as the shutter clicks, which stabilizes your gaze and prevents blinking from spoiling the expression.
Furthermore, from photo selection to final retouching, considerable care was invested. For example, to keep skin tones even while preserving the fabric textures, the exposure was subtly balanced in post-production, keeping the white pristine without jarring overexposure blowouts. The contrast between the Blonde hair and the greenery under the sky immediately guides the viewer's gaze straight to the subject.
Shooting at conventions relies heavily on on-site presence. While posing and waiting for the photographer to find angles, curious passersby inevitably gather around, so staying unbothered by surroundings and locked into character is essential. I opted for wide white sheer gloves for this shoot, initially intending to shade some light, but quickly realized sheer fabric easily traps sweat and shouldn't be worn for extended periods—a practical detail seasoned cosplayers always keep in mind.
Lastly, snapping these photos at an event is simply pure fun. There is no need to overcomplicate poses; sometimes just gazing straight into the camera or resting an index finger near the chin conveys genuine, infectious emotion. Whether trying out this style for the first time or being a seasoned veteran across conventions, dedicating that extra thought to costume selection and makeup execution is the golden rule for great photos.
