This time, I completely recreated Eyjafjalla's winter outfit in the snow. Shooting outdoors in sub-zero temperatures while wearing a short skirt and White over-the-knee socks was definitely a double test of physical endurance and facial muscles. To keep warm without ruining the character's heavy winter feel, I chose to wear thermal underwear underneath, while the outer layer was that detail-packed black corset vest featuring brown criss-cross straps and gold-patterned embroidery; the waist tailoring fit exceptionally well, beautifully outlining the body lines. The white plush hooded jacket draped over the outside not only recreated the design setting, but also served as a great camouflage against the snow and provided a certain degree of wind protection.
Wig styling was one of the key focuses of this look. Long curly hair transitioning from light brown to pinkish-white, paired with the iconic white plush beast ear headband adorned with small red-and-blue ribbons, maximized the details. To maintain the wig's fluffiness under the intense snowy reflection environment, the hair strands needed constant grooming. In terms of makeup, reddish eye makeup and eye color were the soul; paired with a relatively translucent base makeup, it created a natural, translucent look as if the cheeks were flushed from the cold amidst the snow, which is also a unique advantage endowed by the environment.
I put special thought into the lower body coordination. The White over-the-knee socks not only needed to have a tight fit, but also had to be tied with black bows and small gold bells, while the golden lines wrapped around the legs required careful fixing to ensure they wouldn't slip off when walking or sitting. Matched with white short boots featuring plush trims and black flat shoes with bows, the overall layering came to life.
Regarding the design of shooting poses, for the first sitting posture on a bench, I deliberately extended one leg, utilizing the wide-angle perspective of the lens to elongate the leg proportions, which not only showcased the texture of the White over-the-knee socks, but also gave the frame more dynamism. The plush doll held in hand was a great interactive prop; holding it against the chest or pinching it with one hand made expressions and movements much more natural. The second standing posture holding a drink was meant to showcase the complete full-body coordination, holding the doll and beverage side by side while smiling at the camera, expressing a relaxed and cute everyday vibe.
Shooting in the snow requires critical use of lighting as well. Since white snow is a natural reflector, we needed to find the right angle to ensure sufficient facial fill light and avoid overly heavy shadows. The sensible temperature on a snowy day was extremely low; although wearing body warmers, right before every shutter click I had to quickly take off the thick coat and wrap myself back up immediately after shooting—this kind of extreme tug-of-war is also the norm for cosplay photography. Seeing the clean frame where the White over-the-knee socks blended seamlessly into the snowy landscape and the high-end feel of the overall color tone, this shivering freezing photography experience was definitely worth it.
